About Whitebark Pine

The Whitebark Pine inhabits high mountain realms well beyond the limits of other tree species. In these subalpine ecosystems (at elevations of up to 12,000 feet, on exposed slopes and ridges subject to hurricane-force winds and temperatures down to -60°F), Whitebark Pine is not only a great survivor; it’s a great provider — a foundational species in ten states and two Canadian provinces that provides food and shelter for countless high country birds and animals, from mountain goats to grizzly bears.

Slow-growing and long-lived (the oldest known specimen in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains is estimated to be nearly 1,300 years-old), Whitebark Pine is a 5-needle pine that takes on very different growth forms based on environmental factors. At the highest elevations, Whitebarks are hammered by the elements into a krummholz form: low-growing, shrublike, and windswept — dwarfed by years of exposure and crushing loads of snow and ice that persist nine months of the year. This low-cast alpine form explains Whitebark’s other names: “Scrub Pine” and “Creeping Pine.” At lower elevations, where conditions are not as extreme, Whitebark Pines are larger and feature upswept branches with tips crowded with lush foliage. In this setting, Whitebark Pines can grow to 60 feet-tall with shining white trunks 2–3 feet across. The largest known Whitebark Pine is 90 feet-tall.

Pinus albicaulis is one of five pine species worldwide classified as a “Stone Pine” — trees distinguished by their large, dense, and wingless seeds. Stone Pines are unique in their total dependence on birds and animals for seed dispersal and the ultimate survival of their species. Whitebark Pines turn out clumps of dark purple-brown, egg-shaped cones, drizzled in resin and ripe with heavy, nutritious seeds. These seeds are a staple food source for a variety of animals, especially the Clark’s Nutcracker, a rowdy, black-white-and-gray jay, which makes Whitebark Pine seeds its principle food. This bird has a special relationship with Whitebark Pines, and is the chief promulgator of the Whitebark Pine species throughout its wide range. Clark’s Nutcrackers greedily collect Whitebark Pine seeds, and then hide the seeds in secret hoards throughout the high country. A forgotten seed stash is where most Whitebark Pine seedlings start life, and is why Whitebark Pines are commonly seen growing clumps of several trees that have originated from a single cache of seeds.

Despite the faithful help of Clark’s Nutcrackers, the Whitebark Pine species is now at a critical turning point. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has found that the Whitebark Pine Tree is in imminent danger of extinction due to a trend of warmer winters that have allowed native mountain pine beetle populations to grow out of control and wreak havoc throughout higher elevations Whitebark Country. Now is a great time to grow a Whitebark Pine!

zelda‘s “indoor” ⚽️ ball!
Color: Squeaky Green, Size: Medium Size 2 (6")
zelda loves her soccer ball - because of the fabric “tabs”, and the way she treats her toys, we keep it inside. she loves to place all of her toys and bones on our bed, after they’ve been cleaned. this ball is perfect and soft enough to throw it down our steps, where she will run down, retrieve it, and bring it back to the bed. it arrives deflated and comes with the pump and two needles - the pump is not the sturdiest and felt like it was not inflating, but after only having to reflate it once with a bit of air since receiving it ~5-6 months ago, it still holds up!

Small for a medium
Color: Red-Blue, Size: Medium Size 2 (6"), Color: Red-Blue, Size: Medium Size 2 (6")
I got medium.. and it does not look like a medium ball.. it’s rather small. It’s pretty sturdy and my dogs went crazy for it but it’s definitely not the size I thought it was going to be 😂 my dogs chewed one strap within 5 minutes of having it but they’re dogs and that’s what they do lol. I bought this to be an outside ball for them! It’s pretty light but that’s probably because it’s small. Not soft? But feels like a soccer ball. It also had no smell coming out of the box. Also comes with a pump and an extra thing to put in the ball to pump in case you lose one. I like these balls, I expect them to be chewed up because that’s what I bought them for! Fun for my dogs and they are! But the size… it is not medium and that’s the only reason for 3 stars 😂😂😂 Other then that I recommend, your dog will definitely love this! Inside or outside playing! Alone or with another dog!

Great toy for a GSD
Color: Blue Gray, Size: Extra Large Size 5 (9")
My GSD loves to grab the flaps and shake her head with the ball bouncing of the side of her head. This is her favorite toy. I thought she would puncture it but it has held up great since she likes to grab the flaps rather than biting the ball.

Great
Size: Medium, Number of Items: 1
I need something that was soft for my three year old and this ball is super great, it not only is the right size but it also fits in his mouth just right. Although he is a super aggressive chewer, the ball toy hasn't been totally destroyed yet and it is easy on his gums. The ball is so durable that got two of these toys just for fun.

The best!
UPDATE: 08/05/2025 - This is still one of my dog's 2 fav training/play toys. A couple of notes: 1. This is not a chew toy. If your pup is chewing up the rope, that's on you. That being said, you can get 100' of the poly cord rope at Home Depot for like $4.98. You can make nearly 100 ropes out of 100'. How hard is it to replace the rope????? 2. My pup is a now 15 month old Malinois. His original balls, purchase in September 2024 are still in everyday, multiple times per day, play. I did get careless and leave one where he got it and chew the rope. Easily replaced. Nothing to fret over. Yes, that was on me! 3.The foam ball is virtually indestructible! Replace the rope! 4. I noticed the price for the yellow large went from $12 each to $24. THIS will cause me to go elsewhere if they doubled in price. I LOVE these balls but not that much. I noticed they have a new yellow ball that has a strap vs. a rope. I might try that if I need one, but I have 6 of these balls, 2 never used yet, 2 that are virtually new looking, and 2 that have been in play since september 2024. I don't think I'll be buying more any time soon, but if I do need more, I hope they haven't gone up to $24 each. One of my top, go-to training tools. Quality is great other than the shrink wrap around the string joint. It's junk but not essential. Great tug and fetch toy. Essential to teaching a good "out" command (2 are recommended for this).
