The Zebra Plant, also known as Haworthia fasciata, has large, thick, dark-green leaves that grow in a rosette pattern and can live up to 50 years. It is adorned with striking white horizontal stripes that resemble zebra stripes.

The Zebra Haworthia has other common names such as Zebra succulent, little zebra plant, Zebra Haworthia, or Zebra cactus. And don't let those bold markings fool you - the inner side of each leaf is smooth as silk.

The zebra Haworthia is a relatively slow-growing, small succulent, typically grows up to 8 inches tall and spreads to a similar width.

The leaves are triangular in shape and have distinct horizontal white stripes that resemble zebra stripes.

These stripes are actually translucent windows that allow light to penetrate deeper into the leaf, aiding in photosynthesis.

The zebra plant flowers bloom during the spring with tubular white or pale pink flowers on long stalks.

These flowers have a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The zebra plant's unique striped leaves make it a popular choice for indoor houseplants.

When and How to Water Your Zebra Plant

Like many drought-tolerant succulents, it stores water in its plump leaves and thrives best when kept on the dry side. In the spring and summer, water your Zebra Haworthia once every 7–10 days, only when the soil has completely dried out. Always make sure the potting mix dries thoroughly between waterings to avoid root rot.

In the winter dormant months, reduce watering significantly to once every 3–4 weeks or even less. Since the plant’s growth slows down, it needs very little moisture, and keeping the soil dry during this time helps prevent common winter issues like fungal infections and root decay.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Zebra Haworthia

When growing indoors, place your Zebra Haworthia where it receives at least 4–6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily.

Ideally, place your plant in front of an east-facing window or just a few feet away from a bright south-facing window for healthy growth.

Insufficient indoor light can cause your zebra succulent to become leggy, pale, and lose its compact, spiny appearance.

When growing outdoors, make sure your Zebra Haworthia receives at least 4–6 hours of full sun to partial shade every day.

Outdoor plants love bright conditions but benefit from a little afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent scorching. If they don't receive enough light, their stems may grow leggy and become paler, and their spines will shorten, so make your zebra Haworthia happy and give it plenty of light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Zebra plants prefer sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your Zebra succulent plant thrive.

Fertilize your zebra plant once a year in spring with NPK fertilizer with an equal ratio of 5-10-5. Water your zebra plant thoroughly after fertilizing to help the nutrients penetrate the soil and promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can cause damage to the plant's roots.

Native to South African shrublands, this zebra plant is one of several in the Haworthiopsis family and is often confused with Haworthia attenuata plants for their similar appearance to Haworthia fasciata. But trust us when we say that nothing compares to the unique beauty of the popular and beloved Zebra Plant!

Hardiness Zones & More

Always keep your plant away from cold, drafty windows, air vents, or chilly indoor areas to avoid stress. When growing indoors as a houseplant, it prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, and prefers humidity levels around 50–60%. If your home is very dry, you can lightly mist the plant or use a nearby humidifier to maintain ideal humidity.

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 10-11.

However, these succulents are not frost-tolerant—if you live outside of these zones, grow them in containers so you can easily move them indoors during the colder months to protect them from freezing damage.

Zebra plants prefer high humidity levels, ideally between 50-60%. To increase humidity, you can mist the plant regularly or place a humidifier nearby.

Wildlife - Zebra Plant Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The zebra plant attracts a variety of friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its vibrant flowers and nectar-rich blooms make it a popular choice for gardeners looking to attract wildlife to their outdoor spaces.

Butterflies
Bees
Hummingbirds
Lady Bugs
Multi Pollinators
Other Birds

According to ASPCA, the zebra plant is non-toxic to both humans and pets. This makes it a safe and popular choice for indoor plant enthusiasts looking to add some greenery to their homes without worrying about potential harm to their furry friends.

How to Propagate Your Zebra Haworthia Plant

Haworthia fasciata can be propagated through offsets or leaf cuttings. Offsets, also known as "pups," are small plantlets that grow from the base of the mother plant. These can be carefully separated and planted in their own pots. Leaf cuttings can also be taken by removing a healthy leaf from the plant, allowing it to dry and callus for a few days, and then placing it in well-draining soil.

Key Takeaways

  1. Zebra Haworthia is known for its bold white striping and textured leaves, which resemble zebra patterns, making it one of the most eye-catching mini succulents for containers or desks.
  2. This drought-tolerant plant stores water in its thick leaves, requiring minimal watering and making it incredibly low-maintenance.
  3. Unlike many succulents, Zebra Haworthia remains compact and rarely outgrows its pot, making it perfect for small-space gardening or terrariums.
  4. It’s non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a pet-friendly choice for succulent lovers with furry companions at home.
  5. It thrives in low-light conditions and is one of the best succulents for indoor spaces, making it ideal for offices, windowsills, and small apartments.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Zebra Haworthia (Haworthiopsis fasciata) is a stunning succulent that captivates with its unique zebra-like stripes and compact size. It is a popular choice for indoor gardening and succulent arrangements due to its striking appearance. This plant also thrives in rock gardens, adding a touch of natural beauty to any landscape. As for care, it prefers bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and sparing watering to prevent root rot. With its low-maintenance nature and eye-catching features, the Zebra Haworthia is a fantastic addition to any plant lover's collection.

A Brilliant, Emotional, and Unforgettable Sci-Fi Adventure
Format: Paperback
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is one of those rare novels that delivers everything you could want from science fiction: gripping suspense, fascinating science, humor, heart, and a genuinely moving story about survival and friendship. The novel follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, the stakes become clear: humanity is facing extinction, and he may be the only person who can stop it. The mystery unfolds at a perfect pace, blending high tension with moments of discovery that keep you turning the pages. What makes this book stand out is how seamlessly it combines hard science with accessibility. Like the author’s earlier work, the scientific details feel authentic and well researched, but they never overwhelm the story. Instead, the problem-solving becomes the engine of the plot. Each obstacle feels real, and the solutions are both clever and satisfying. The biggest surprise—and the emotional core of the novel—is the relationship that develops during the mission. Without giving anything away, it adds warmth, humor, and depth that elevate the story far beyond a typical survival thriller. By the end, the novel becomes less about science and more about courage, trust, and the willingness to sacrifice for others. The pacing is excellent throughout, with a balance of suspense, humor, and heartfelt moments. If there’s a small drawback, it’s that some plot developments feel a bit convenient. But the strong characters and emotional payoff more than make up for it. Overall, this is a must-read for fans of science fiction, space exploration, and anyone who enjoys smart, character-driven storytelling. It’s thrilling, funny, deeply human, and surprisingly emotional. I finished it feeling both entertained and uplifted. Highly recommended.

Proof that lightning strikes twice ... Weir has done it again!
Format: Hardcover
According to a 2003 article on the NASA website, "NASA-funded scientists have recently learned that cloud-to-ground lightning frequently strikes the ground in two or more places ..." and that the third and fourth strokes of a lightning flash will follow the same path as the second stroke. In other words, lightning DOES strike the same place twice. But you don't need to search the web for this information. If you want proof that lightning strikes twice, just read Andy Weir's newest book, Project Hail Mary, and you'll see that Weir has created a giant sci-fi bestseller, in the same electric path as The Martian. Ryland Grace has a puzzle on his hands. He wakes up without a clue as to where he is, but he seems to be alone except for a computer AI that was keeping him alive. Unfortunately it didn't seem to be doing the same for two others in his ... wherever he is ... as he notes the decayed corpses in their creches on the ... well, it's a ship. A space ship. And bit by bit Grace puts the pieces of the puzzle together. An alien microbe has been discovered. Ryland Grace is brought on to the science team to learn more about the life form because Grace, currently a middle school science teacher, wrote papers about the notation that there does not need to be water to create life. Only in a biozone such as Earth's would water be needed, but other building blocks could be used in other systems. The science community as a whole mocked Grace, which is why he left and went on to teach kids, but now, he may be the best suited to understand this new life form. And as he remembers more and more, he also remembers that this life form is feeding on the energy output of the sun, which is decreasing the energy that gets to Earth, which spells disaster - as in the end of all life as currently known - on Earth if something isn't done. Scientists discover that Sol isn't the only star that is losing its energy output - likely due to the alien consumption, but that there is one star, in the center of all the known stars losing their energy, that remains constant with its output. In which case, the answer to the survival for Earth is likely found there, at Tau Ceti. The world's best scientific minds come together (by force and coercion) to create a ship that can get to Tau Ceti in twelve years (using the alien microbe as fuel) with shuttle pods to bring back answers to how to save the planet, but for the crew, it's a one-way trip. Knowing why he's there is only the first puzzle for Grace. Now he has to figure out how to save Earth. There's a very small window of time for him to discover the way to save the human race and get the answers sent back. Take too long and the shuttles will return to a dead planet. This book is amazing. Author Andy Weir brings us back to the magic that made The Martian so successful - an abandoned scientist trying to survive. But Ryland Grace's story is more complicated because he's not just trying to survive, but also help humanity survive. There's lots and lots of science - which is part of Weir's writing signature - and there's also a really wonderful story. It's hard for me to tell you just what I liked about this book because anything I write will be a spoiler and a huge part of the joy in this book is making the discoveries with Ryland Grace. Grace is our main character, but through the liberal use of flashbacks, we have a full cast of characters - at least one quite important to the story. Everyone is unique and individual which makes it easy to read, but just as with The Martian, where Mark Watney's personality carries the story, Ryland Grace here is the smart-mouth, sometimes funny, obsessed scientist infusing his personal tastes into his discoveries. He's also quite smart - which is good since he will need his intellect to save all of humanity. This is a page-turner. I did not want to put this book down. Neither did my 21 year old son who picked up my copy after I was well into it and finished it before I did. And days later he's still talking about how much he liked it and quoting sections of it to me at the dinner table. I hope Ballantine Books will do a very large print run because this is going to be huge seller and you definitely don't want to miss out on the biggest thing to come out in 2021. Looking for a good book? Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is proof that lightning strikes twice as this has all the excitement and energy of Weir's debut novel, with a more complicated storyline that will hold the reader all the way to the end.

Excellent Hard Sci-Fi… Until the Politics Pull You Out
Format: Kindle
I was really excited to dive into Project Hail Mary. As a longtime Isaac Asimov fan, I’ve been craving fresh, modern hard science fiction that actually respects the science. This book delivered — at least for a while. The author injects real science into the story in a way that’s both fun and fantastic. You don’t need to be an engineer to follow it; a solid high-school education is plenty. The concepts stretch your imagination without ever feeling impossible, and for the first chunk of the book I was hooked. I genuinely thought I’d found a new favorite author. Then the jarring interruptions started. Out of nowhere you get yanked out of the immersive sci-fi world by modern political pandering that feels completely unnecessary. A random parenthetical about Columbus “discovering an already inhabited world” when comparing something to the New World. Casual pronoun lectures. Characters selected or described by race and identity in ways that scream “check the boxes.” These moments don’t serve the story — they feel injected. Once you notice the author’s leanings, it becomes hard to unsee. Each time it happens, the fantasy evaporates. It takes several chapters to sink back into the story… only for the next micro-lecture to pull you right back out. Overall, I loved the writing, the hard science, and the imagination. It’s some of the best sci-fi I’ve read in years. I just wish the author had trusted the story instead of sneaking in real-world politics. It’s like eating the best meal of your life… and then finding a hair or two in it. Strongly recommended for the sci-fi, with the above caveat.

AMAZING debut novel!!!
Format: Kindle
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice 🌶️🌶️.5 Romance 💘💘💘 Vibes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dual 1st person POV - Ara (26) & Rogue (39 - but looks mid-20s: they can live hundreds of years so this isn't that large of a gap as it could've been which I heavily appreciate lol) Tropes: enemies to lovers, fae/human wars (deep hatred for each other), shifters (dragons- MMC can only partial shift with wings), one horse, one bed, touch her and d!e, found family, abduction turned to freedom The Last Storm is the debut novel from JD Linton and let me tell you, you guys NEED to read this. The plot was engaging and the editing was was amazing (especially for a debut novel). Our FMC, Ara, is stuck in her gilded cage longing for a life outside of her small town. She uses her books to escape and live vicariously through the pages (honestly, relatable). After her father announces her betrothal to her childhood friend (to whom she has no romantic feelings for), Ara tumbles unknowingly into a desperate plot trying to stop the humans from slaughtering the Fae. As one can expect from an enemies to lovers / kidnapper/captive romance, Ara fights her attraction and lust towards our MMC, Rogue (the King of the Fae), for as long as she can. Upon seeing Ara for the first time, Rogue is instantly aware that she is his fated mate (not a spoiler). Since she is the General's only daughter, he plans to abduct her and use her as leverage to stop the brutality. During Ara's time in Rogue's captivity, their banter and chemistry continue to rise until they finally boil over and come together (quite literally, and many times I may add 😉). Here's what I LOVED: - Rogue continuously seeks advice from his elders and deeply respects their opinions and life experience and tries to implement their recommendations - Rogue makes many mistakes in the beginning but we see him actively work on not repeating them as the book progresses. The level of self-awareness and his ability to change his behavior was impressive - The magic system is intricate and we have only scraped the surface. As the series continues and Ara progresses in her powers, I'm sure we'll get to see more of this. I absolutely LOVE the messaging system that is used in this book. - Ara's struggles are so human and so raw. She is experiencing so much guilt and pain and hurt and getting to see her work through each of these emotions is inspiring. Especially as her and Rogue get closer and she learns she can lean on him as well, that she is not alone. - While this is the start of a series, there is NO cliffhanger! There's a bit of a teaser of something major that is going to happen at the start of the next book, but it's not a cliffhanger in the sense that we aren't sure if someone is going to live or d!e or if they'll be separated. For that, I am very thankful! This book was so much fun that I will definitely be returning to book 2, even if it takes several months (or longer since this is an debut author) to publish! - Lastly, the cover is GORGEOUS! And I love the title! I'll copy a few of my favorite quotes below so you can have a little taste of the author's writing and the world she's cultivated. 😊 Top Highlights from The Last Storm On days like this, when my heart was heavy and my mind clouded, I resorted to books— to escape, to forget, to find freedom where I had none. If I were to marry him, my face would always be turned to the window, searching for more, and if not that, I would be a shell of the person I am now. I stepped back to admire her, thr0bbing at the sight. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. To ever exist. Nothing, no one, had ever deserved to be worshiped more. All men should be made to kneel before her. But she would have to settle for me. The taste of her met my t0ngue as my scent merged with hers, forever branding her. Mine. I l!cked the wound. Hers. Completely and utterly hers. I didn’t claim her in ownership. I claimed her as my one. Devoted myself to one. With that mark, my body and soul were bound to her. I would never be with anyone else, emotionally or physically. It would be her or no one, until my last breath. “Scream my name. Let everyone know who I belong to.” I had never really cared about the weather before, but now, clear skies meant everything to me, and I was grateful to see another calm morning. “There will never be another woman for me.” He paused. “Ever.” I stilled at his words. “What… Why?” “This”— his thumb slid down across the mark—“ is a symbol of… surrender. I know you believe that it was my claim upon you, but it wasn’t. It never was. I bound my body and soul to you, little storm.” “I also know that it is more than this tiny, insignificant mark on your skin that binds me to you. It’s you. All of you. Your strength and resilience. Your determination to endure no matter what fate throws at you. Your love for love and stories and hope. You are entirely the opposite of everything that I am and I would gladly wear your shackles if it meant I could have you.” My mate. Mine. And then everything shifted and I understood. I understood everything. The surrender. The deep, soul-craving longing. Bound. I was bound to him. Body and soul. Entirely his. “I would’ve waited forever,” he whispered back, understanding. Seriously, everyone.. add this to your TBR!!

A Decent Fae Romance
Format: Kindle
** 3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 ** First off I want to say that I found the author, J. D. Linton, on TikTok right before the release of the sequel. I bought the first 2 books to support her release, so congrats to her for the release of the sequel! Overall, I liked the story & plot, I liked the characters, and I liked the spice. The downfalls: not enough development between the characters for the romance, and it leaned a little heavy into the tropes. A lot of stuff is told to you, which could have been used as devices to drive the plot and emotions of the characters. 🛑🛑 Mild Spoilers ahead, I tried to hide the obvious ones 🛑🛑 This is very obviously a fated mates, which is a trope I usually really enjoy. But I wish the relationship between Ara & Rogue had much more development before it's realized that they're mates, instead of Rogue knowing almost immediately and using it for nefarious purposes (at least in the beginning before they get to know each other). By revealing this within the first quarter of the book, I feel like it leaves less room for them to fall for each other organically (albeit with help from the mating bond) and they love each other because of the mating bond. I was disappointed as soon as Rogue know (literally only 5% in) and I literally made a note: "As much as II love a good mating trope, I wish we had to work for it a little more. Where's the fun in just telling us?" I believe that by holding out and feeding the reader snippets of a potential bond, it would've been more rewarding as a reader. I also wish there was more world building - we are told of a war between human & fae but don't get to really experience any of it. Ara is sheltered in her human home, then sheltered in Rogue's castle. There's bits and pieces about what the war has done on either side - but we're more told of the aftermath and don't really experience any of it. Ara's father is supposed to be the king's #1 general - yet he is at home with his family & with Ara for the first couple chapters. Her, her family, nor her village seem to be affected by the 10 year war going on on their borders. I wish there was a little more setup to make this conflict - an actual war - feel more than a skirmish between fighting territories. Linton could also be a little repetitive - with the biggest culprit being when Ara is upset she "brings [her] knees to [her] chest]" and either sits like that or cries. Every time she is upset this phrase is mentioned. I would get it if this was her crutch, or how she copes with grief and stress, but that should be explained why she does it so often or it becomes repetitive. I started to get annoyed with how often she would sit like this solely because it happens every couple chapters. However, I did really like the spice. I love an enemies to lovers trope, especially when it results in spicy scenes. The spicy scenes weren't anything new, but they were fun. Wish there were more but that could also just be me - there is no such thing as too much spice 😂 Would I read again? Probably not, I'm super picky with rereads. Although I did genuinely enjoy my first read through! Will I continue the series? Probably, at least for the sequel. As for #3, kind of depends on where I am with my TBR once that is released All in all an enjoyable, fast paced read
