Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale' Albo-Variegata

White and cream variegation appears where parts of the leaf have little or no chlorophyll, creating sharp contrast against the dark, raised surface of 'Dragon Scale'. Each leaf can show a different mix of marbling, speckling, streaking or broader pale sections.

The plant stays compact and upright. Fresh leaves open softer and may change in colour and firmness as they harden.

White variegation and raised leaf texture

Thick, shield-like leaves have a peltate attachment and bullate panels divided by strong veins. White, cream and pale-green markings spread across a dark green base, accentuating the strongly veined, raised structure of the mature leaves. Green sections provide more photosynthetic tissue, while pale sections create the strongest contrast. The plant remains compact, although size and pattern vary among cultivated specimens. Compared with standard 'Dragon Scale', the albo form is brighter while retaining the same pronounced raised structure.

Species origin, name and botanical background

At species level, Alocasia baginda is associated with Borneo, especially eastern Kalimantan, in warm, humid tropical conditions. It belongs to the Araceae family. The genus name Alocasia derives from a- and Colocasia, while baginda is an Indonesian honorific associated with royal address.

How to grow Albo-variegated Dragon Scale Alocasia

  • Light: Bright indirect light or gently filtered morning sun keeps leaves firm and the white-to-green contrast clear. Pale tissue marks more easily in harsh direct sun.
  • Watering: Water when approximately the upper third of the mix has dried. The compact rhizome needs moisture, followed by a mix that drains well below the roots.
  • Substrate: Use bark, coarse mineral particles and a moisture-retentive base. After watering, the mix should drain well and stay airy.
  • Temperature: Keep the root zone consistently warm and away from cold glass or draughts. Cold, wet substrate is a primary risk during slower growth.
  • Humidity: Steady moderate to high humidity helps new pale leaves expand cleanly, especially in dry indoor air.
  • Feeding: Apply diluted fertiliser when new leaves are forming. Light feeding is safer for pale tissue, which can mark more easily from salt build-up.
  • Leaf handling: Allow new leaves to harden before cleaning or repositioning them, as fresh white and cream areas bruise more readily.

Common Albo-variegated Dragon Scale Alocasia problems and solutions

  • Brown marks on white areas: Brown patches appearing first on pale sectors may result from direct sun, dry air, bruising, hard-water residue or fertiliser salts. Review light exposure, humidity, handling and mineral accumulation.
  • Yellowing with a heavy pot: Leaf yellowing while the lower mix remains wet suggests reduced root oxygen, excessive pot volume or cool substrate. Inspect the roots and improve aeration.
  • Crisp pale margins: White or cream edges may become dry and brittle because of low humidity, inconsistent watering or salt accumulation. Stabilise moisture and humidity and flush excess minerals.
  • Small new leaves: A noticeably reduced new leaf can follow transport, root disturbance, low light or cool conditions. Maintain steady care through the next growth cycle.
  • Soft rhizome tissue: Basal tissue that loses firmness may indicate root or rhizome decline in persistently wet substrate. Replant the remaining firm rhizome tissue in a clean, airy mix.
  • Mite or thrips damage: Fine scarring around veins, petiole bases or leaf undersides may indicate sap-feeding pests. Inspect both leaf surfaces and emerging growth regularly.

Is Albo-variegated Dragon Scale Alocasia toxic to people or pets?

Albo-variegated Dragon Scale Alocasia contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. If plant tissue is eaten, it can irritate the mouth. Keep it away from pets and young children, and use gloves when cutting leaves, dividing the rhizome or handling sap.

Great Color
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Cartridge Ink
I was hesitant on purchasing this item. My skepticism was relieved when I installed and printed the first picture...very good quality. However, seems like the ink supply went quickly, either not a complete cartridge or I print too much(which I don't).

I would say great value, but I can buy it for the same price in store. I think it’s more of convenience to be able to get it without having to go out.
