Philodendron 'Ring of Fire'

Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' is a variegated Philodendron with long, narrow leaves, deeply serrated margins and shifting colour in green, cream, yellow and warm orange tones. Its leaves are irregular by nature: some show fine speckling, others carry broader pale or orange sections, and the toothed edges give the plant its sharp outline.

The plant was originally known as Henderson’s Pride and is associated with Keith Henderson. The later trade name Ring of Fire became the name most widely used in cultivation.

Serrated variegated leaves

  • Leaf margins: Long leaves develop strongly toothed edges, giving the plant a narrow, jagged shape.
  • Variegation: Cream, yellow, green and orange tones can appear as speckles, sectors or marbled areas.
  • Growth pace: Growth is slow, with each new leaf adding a different balance of colour and edge shape.
  • Background: Originally Henderson’s Pride, later widely grown under the trade name Philodendron 'Ring of Fire'.

Colour and leaf shape over time

Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' changes most through leaf pattern and margin shape. The narrow blades can look very different from one leaf to the next, with some showing stronger serration and others carrying more cream or orange. Healthy plants can show this variation across successive leaves.

The plant grows best when the root zone stays airy and the stem base dries slightly between waterings. Keep firm, functioning leaves even if they are less colourful than the newest growth, and remove only leaves that are fully damaged or declining.

Care for serrated variegated growth

  • Light: Give bright indirect light. Harsh midday sun can scorch pale leaf sections, while very low light slows growth further.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 3–5 cm of substrate is dry. Keep moisture even, but avoid a wet stem base in cool conditions.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite or pumice, coco chips and a small moisture-holding fraction. The roots need oxygen as much as moisture.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity supports smoother expansion while the narrow leaves are unfurling.
  • Temperature: Keep around 20–27 °C for active growth. Avoid cold drafts and cold, wet substrate.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Strong fertiliser can damage roots or pale leaf margins.
  • Support: Add a slim support only if the stem begins to lean. Young plants usually need stable potting more than a large pole.
  • Pruning: Remove fully damaged leaves only when necessary. Avoid cutting firm leaves just to change the colour balance of the plant.

Leaf and root problems to catch early

  • Brown patches on pale sections: Check for direct sun, low humidity or dry root stress. Move to filtered light and stabilise watering.
  • Yellowing leaves: Check the root ball and stem base for excess moisture. Improve drainage and let the upper substrate dry before watering.
  • Deformed new leaves: Look for thrips, low humidity or inconsistent watering while the leaf is still folded.
  • Growth has stopped completely: Check temperature, light and root health before increasing fertiliser.
  • Soft stem base: Unpot and inspect roots if the stem feels unstable or the lower petioles collapse. Wet, compacted substrate is a common trigger.

Pet safety for Philodendron 'Ring of Fire'

Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' should be kept away from pets and children. Like other Philodendron, it can contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and digestive tract if ingested. Wear gloves when cutting if your skin reacts to aroid sap.

Henderson’s Pride background

Philodendron is an Araceae genus whose name is derived from Greek roots meaning “love” and “tree”. Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' was originally known as Henderson’s Pride and is associated with Keith Henderson. The Ring of Fire name later became established in the plant trade.

Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' develops serrated foliage, shifting variegation and a narrow jagged leaf shape.

Great Insight on Marriage for Christians
Format: Paperback
This book has amazing insight for Christian couples on how to build a great marriage. It is not like the other marriage help books. It's insight flies in the face of I've seen taught in other books on marriage. Yet the book has Biblical insight on marriage that is more useful and accurate than any other I have seen. I suspect this book will be of little use to folks who are not Christians (Christians are folks who have surrendered to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and who earnestly desire to please Him). Yet for Christians, this book will speak truth and provide insight that is Biblical, true, and that probably has the best chance of helping you develop a deeper, richer marriage. Not that I am any expert on marriage, but I find the Holy Spirit within me leaping in support of many of the principles that Francis & Lisa painted across the pages of this book. The book is also elegantly and artfully written, so it is an easy and enjoyable read. If you are a Christian and want a deeper, richer, Biblical marriage, then this book is worth every cent, and it's insight will last a lot longer than that latte whose scent may be drifting though your thoughts at this moment.

Excellent resource for couples
Format: Kindle
Good book! Chapters are short, to the point, and practical. My wife and I read this together and were blessed by it. You and Me Forever is unlike other marriage books. Couples are taught to live together on mission making God's will their highest priority - not their own personal happiness or security. It's taught that while marriage and family are wonderful things, good things can become an idol. The Chans seek to help people gain a biblical perspective on marriage and family, and they do a great job. Like other books from Francis Chan, arguments made are simple, easy to understand and backed up with scripture. Chapters are mostly written by Francis and Lisa together, though they do contain a section written exclusively by Lisa (my wife especially connected with these). Chapters close with meaningful reflection questions that couples should take advantage of - doing so blessed my marriage and they can yours too. If you enjoyed the book Crazy Love or simply want to read an excellent book for Christian couples, this is a good one. I'm recommending everyone at my church pick it up.

amazing! I wish I had read this marriage book ...
Format: Paperback
Ok...amazing! I wish I had read this marriage book about 9 years and 20 marriage books ago! This book changed the way I viewed EVERYTHING. I saw some reviewers mention they read Crazy Love by Francis Chan first which is what drew them to this, so I'm doing the opposite. I loved this one SO much I am going to read Crazy Love next! I've handed my copy off to a friend and I've recommended to many others. Everyone who has read it has told me they've been spreading the word. It was eye-opening for me as a wife and mother, to realize that living a Christian life is MUCH much more than having a happy family. My kids are still toddlers and I'm SO thankful for having read this book now so that we can truly center our marriage and family around Christ and show our children that living the authentic Christian life is more than just trying to be a perfect family. The book dives into much more, but that parenting chapter towards the end really hit me hard! (In a good way!!). I can't say enough for how genuinely inspirational this whole book was! It's one I couldn't put down and I can't wait to get it back so I can read it again.

For marriage or for life?
Format: Paperback
My fiancé and I bought this book through the recommendation of a friend. We really enjoyed going through this book together as Mr. and Mrs. Chan discuss the importance of Christianity not only in marriage but also in our day to day lifestyles. Before starting "You and Me Forever," my fiancé and I had recently finished "The Meaning of Marriage" by Tim Keller, which I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in getting a fundamental view on marriage in the light of the gospel. Both books are similar in the aspect of this topic, however, "You and Me Forever" was a great book to read because it was not a overly saturated religious book about marriage. This book really challenges the readers to live to not only think of marriage in the light of the gospel but also their daily lives. So many marriage books are just that, marriage books. Do this, do that, and you will have a successful marriage. This book is unique in the sense of really pushing the reader to dig deeper in their spiritual life. Encouraging the growth in their heart rather than just biblically saturated "go to advice" for a better or stronger marriage. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are married, single, young or old. This book gives a great view of what your marriage, life, and heart should look like in the light of eternity!
