- Grown, Packaged and Shipped exclusively by Wekiva Foliage. This rare "Ant Plant" is an another interesting and unusual epiphyte. They are native to southeast Asia and belong to the family Rubiaceae (relatives of coffee and gardenias). The plants have a smooth skinned swollen base that is riddled with caverns and tunnels that the ants use for their home. This swollen base, or caudex will continue to get larger and larger as the specimen matures.
- Maze plant is also sometimes called ant plant because, in its native environment, certain species of ants will nest in chambers inside its caudex. But don't worry -- maze plant will not attract ants to your home, nor are the ant species found in many homes in North America likely to want to nest in this exotic plant.
- This plant is one of nature’s wonders. It brings with it a big secret: a corrider system inside the tube. In the tropics, ants live inside the tubes, they work together with the plant to get nutrition.
- They like high humidity, good drainage and bright light, therefore making them a great terrarium epiphyte when a sufficient light source is available. We have found that they do quite well when mounted onto background material. Available plants are very nicely established and have a caudex (swollen base) which is about 1-2" wide, growing in a 4" pot.
- Water lightly when the top 1" or so is dry to keep the pot slightly moist. As the caudex size increaes, you can water less frequently as more water will be stored in the caudex. When repotting, these would do best in something that would be moisture retentive like an orchid bark or sphagnum.
