Amydrium zippelianum

Rooting nodes and large, deeply divided adult foliage define Amydrium zippelianum, a large-growing Amydrium from East Malesia and New Guinea. Young plants are usually much simpler, while adult foliage develops with time, space and a suitable climbing route.

Mature plants can carry heavier stems, larger leaf blades and deeper division than juvenile growth. Its stems can root as they move, and adult leaves can become broad, ovate-cordate and pinnatisect toward the midrib. Indoors, the support and pot should be chosen for heavier stems, larger blades and rooting nodes.

Rooting nodes and divided adult leaves

  • Prostrate to climbing stems: Stems can move along a surface before climbing upward.
  • Rooting nodes: Nodes can root as they contact a suitable surface.
  • Large mature leaves: Adult foliage can become much larger than juvenile growth.
  • Ovate-cordate outline: Mature leaf blades can develop a broad heart-based outline.
  • Pinnatisect division: Older leaves can split deeply toward the midrib.
  • Stem and leaf weight: Mature stems and larger divided leaves need room and a sturdy support.

Mature leaf structure and range

Amydrium zippelianum is native from central Malesia to New Guinea, with records from Maluku, New Guinea, the Philippines and Sulawesi. It occurs in forest habitats from lowland to highland conditions, where stems can root, extend and climb through humid vegetation.

In cultivation, juvenile plants may carry simpler blades for some time, while adult leaf division develops gradually with age and stronger growth. A broad support or moss pole can guide the stem and keep the plant easier to manage in a pot.

Care for a large-growing Amydrium

  • Light: Use bright filtered light to limit stretched internodes while keeping large leaves out of harsh direct sun.
  • Water: Water when the upper substrate begins to dry, keeping the root zone lightly moist during active growth.
  • Substrate: Use a coarse aroid mix with drainage and air pockets around thicker roots and rooting nodes.
  • Support: Provide a sturdy climbing surface early, before the stems and leaves become heavy.
  • Humidity: Elevated humidity keeps expanding foliage more flexible and reduces dry-edge stress.
  • Space: Give the plant room to extend, because mature stems and divided leaves can outgrow a small support quickly.

Large-leaf and stem issues

  • Simple juvenile leaves: Young plants naturally look less divided than mature specimens.
  • Small new growth: Weak roots, low light or lack of climbing structure can keep leaves smaller.
  • Wet stem zones: Rooting nodes can rot if pressed into dense, stagnant substrate.
  • Leaf damage: Large divided leaves can tear or crease when handled, moved or grown in cramped spaces.

Safety around Amydrium zippelianum

Amydrium zippelianum is an Araceae plant with irritating sap. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash hands after pruning or handling damaged leaves and stems.

Name origin and publication

Nicolson published Amydrium zippelianum in Blumea in 1968. The species name honours Alexander Zippelius, whose name is also connected to several plants from the Malesian region.

Unless you're trying to eat a whole meal in them, I suggest you buy.
Size: 12oz - 500 Count, Color: White
Good quality for the price you're paying. Some of the bowls crack a little easily, but they hold up pretty nicely overall. From hot soups to ice cream and cereal or a nice bowl of wet food for your pet. They're a good size for a serving and don't wilt quickly when holding any liquids. And they compost, so it's good wn the carbon footprint since I can use them instead of seeking out cardboard for my garden compost.

So many for so cheap.
Size: 12oz - 500 Count, Color: White
So apparently I’m not great at estimating what 12 ounces really looks like in a bowl. Therefore they were smaller than I was expecting, but since I’m lazy and hate to do dishes, they are perfect for our household. Too small is better than too large in my book , as we have no problem with going back for seconds, which these bowls will definitely hold up for. They are leak proof and a great value for how many you get. The thickness it about what you’d expect although the lip seems slightly thin and bends easily when trying to separate them, which isn’t difficult, but not simple by any means. Again not a deal breaker for our house.

Great product
Size: 12oz - 500 Count, Color: White
These bowls and plates are awesome! We love that they are compostable when we are home but we also use them camping and love that they don’t have the waxy coating so we can throw them in the solo stove and they burn clean. They are also strong and can easily hold a heavy amount of food.

This is an incredible value. Tons of bowls. They are very sturdy. I have to double them if I serve soup.
