Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' — satin vine with silver-edged leaves

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' has dark green, heart-shaped leaves edged and flecked in silver. The leaf surface is satin-matte, with a muted silver cast in bright filtered light.

This cultivar belongs to Scindapsus pictus, a wet-tropical climbing aroid that grows with aerial rootlets. Indoors it can trail from a pot or climb when given a pole; regular pruning keeps vines shorter, while a support lets stems lengthen upward.

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' silver leaf profile

  • Plant type: Tropical evergreen aroid vine.
  • Family: Araceae.
  • Species background: Scindapsus pictus is native from SE Bangladesh to western and central Malesia.
  • Leaf shape: Ovate to heart-shaped juvenile leaves.
  • Leaf surface: Satin-textured, dark green and softly reflective.
  • Pattern: Silver edging and irregular silver-grey markings.
  • Growth habit: Trailing or climbing with aerial rootlets.

Training Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' indoors

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' usually stays in its juvenile leaf phase indoors, with neat entire leaves rather than mature lobed foliage. A hanging pot lets stems cascade, while a moss pole or coir pole gives the aerial rootlets a surface to attach to.

The smaller, darker leaves distinguish 'Argyraeus' from broader silver-splashed Scindapsus pictus forms. Consistent warmth, moderate watering and an airy mix keep the root zone from staying wet around the vine base.

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light keeps stems shorter and reduces the risk of pale leaves scorching.
  • Watering: Water when the top part of the mix has dried, then drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new leaves unfurl cleanly.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–29 °C, and away from cold draughts.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix with bark, perlite, coco chips or similar coarse material.
  • Pot choice: Use drainage holes; a support can guide climbing stems and increase leaf size over time.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Pon or mineral substrate can be used after transition, with a low reservoir while new water roots form.
  • Pruning: Trim long vines above a node to keep the plant fuller and root the cuttings separately.

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' problems and leaf signals

  • Yellowing leaves: Often follow wet substrate or roots sitting without enough oxygen.
  • Curling leaves: Can point to dry roots, heat stress or damaged roots after overwatering.
  • Brown patches: Direct sun can scorch the silver-marked leaf surface.
  • Leaf spots: Wet leaves and poor airflow can increase fungal spotting risk.
  • Pests: Check leaf backs and nodes for mites, scale, mealybugs and thrips.

Safety for Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus'

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if chewed or swallowed. Keep it away from pets and children; mouth irritation, drooling and vomiting can occur after ingestion.

Botanical background for Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus'

Scindapsus comes from a Greek name associated with plants growing on tree trunks, matching the climbing habit of the genus. Pictus means painted or brightly coloured, while 'Argyraeus' means silvery and refers to the pale markings around the leaves.

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' trails from hanging pots and climbs when its aerial rootlets reach a pole.

8.5 sound out of the box! (Want bespoke configs? Sorry.) Great Value, Easy Setup
Style: AVR-X1800H
Excellent unit. Off the shelf sound is very nice, but every room is different, so a bit of tweaking is usually required. Accessing the EQ settings takes a bit of sleuthing and the use of its app... which is subpar. The app interface can only be explained as designed by people who must not actually use it. Still, a wonderful machine at a fair price. I run in ECO mode and it powers my 35x47 room with plenty of power to spare and NEVER gets hot. I am running Infinity Reference speakers and a Klipsch sub in a 7.1 config. I highly recommend the use of the included Audyssey calibration microphone! My prior experience with Yamaha YPAO left me wondering what was the point. This time with the Denon, it set up the speakers, (i'm embarrassed to say) better than I did on my own. (To be fair, I'm sure Yamaha has improved its YPAO in the decade since my prior purchase) Bottom line. If you want maximum flexibility on EQ. Shop a different solution. However, If you want quality sound with 4K and up to and including ATMOS processing, with minimal tweaking, or just want to unbox and play, this is a wonderful unit at a very fair price.

Does well for my needs
Style: AVR-X1800H
I got this to replace a Sony head unit that was starting to fail after 10 or so years of use. This one doesn’t have the same power output, but I use Bose speakers. Bose is fairly low wattage for the most part so no problem there. Setup was fine. My only complaint is that center channel only dialog is too quiet. I need to adjust that. Everything else is great. I don’t care about Internet connectivity, but it has that if you want it. I’m very happy so far with this unit.

Nice AVR
Style: AVR-X1800H
Refurbished and looking like brand new. One small scratch on the side. It went in a cabinet and it's hidden. All paperwork seemed to be there. If I didn't know it looks like factory sealed . I've got an older Denon. Just wanted to move up to 7.2. Audyssey recognize a second sub. But neither did my older on. No problem with that though. Just FYI. After the original setup and minor tweaking it sounds fantastic for me. I haven't had it but a few days and I hope I get many years of enjoyment from this
