Livistona chinensis - Chinese Fan Palm

Livistona chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese Fan Palm, is a striking tropical palm celebrated for its graceful, fan-shaped leaves and slow-growing, compact form. Its large, glossy green fronds have an elegant, drooping appearance, creating a lush and architectural display. Growing to a height of 6–12 meters in the ground or remaining smaller in containers, the Chinese Fan Palm is ideal for feature planting, tropical landscapes, or as a stunning indoor specimen.

Position

The Chinese Fan Palm thrives in full sun to partial shade, adapting well to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay, provided they are well-drained. This hardy palm is moderately drought-tolerant and can withstand light frost, making it suitable for temperate, tropical, and subtropical climates.

Growth

This slow-growing palm reaches a mature height of 6–12 meters with a spread of 2–3 meters in the ground. When grown in containers, it remains more compact. Its symmetrical crown of fan-shaped fronds makes it a fantastic choice for creating vertical interest, tropical ambiance, or as a statement plant in gardens or patios.

Planting Guide

Livistona chinensis grows best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Plant in spring, spacing plants about 3–4 meters apart to allow for natural spread. For container planting, use a high-quality palm mix, and position the container in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant Care

Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce watering as the Chinese Fan Palm is moderately drought-tolerant once mature. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser formulated for palms during the growing season to promote healthy foliage and steady growth. Prune dead or damaged fronds as needed to maintain its tidy appearance. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and protect roots in warmer climates.

Barkbox Betty
Color: Betty Bigfoot
A lot smaller than pictured. Still like it. Durable. Dog likes to carry toy around. Dog is 70 lbs and a heavy chewer and toy has lasted.

Fave dog toy!
Color: Betty Bigfoot
Great toy! My dog prefers the ball inside which is great for chewing on, bouncing, and playing fetch. Very thick rubber, lasts a good while. The outside cover is pretty tough, but for those who like a challenge it should last a little while. It really depends on how determined and fierce the dog is about chewing! We’ve had 3 of them. We always keep a back up for when one expires!!

Perfect for Heavy Chewers—Huge Hit in Our House!
Color: Aurora Beast
This toy is an absolute favorite in my house! My dogs are usually pretty picky and can destroy most toys within minutes, but this one has seriously impressed me. It’s super durable while still being soft enough for them to carry around and cuddle with. They’re completely obsessed—whether they’re chewing on it, tossing it around, or just walking around proudly with it in their mouths. It keeps them entertained for a long time, which is a huge win. Definitely worth it if you have strong chewers and want something that actually lasts. I’ll be buying more from this line for sure!

SUPERB FOR AGGRESSIVE CHEWERS
Color: Betty Bigfoot
Our Silver Lab, Theo, is a VERY aggressive chewer who loves destroying balls! We bought Barkbox Betty for Theo’s Birthday, and it was almost a week before Theo removed the cover when he discovered the ball inside and he loves it! And it’s tough design seems to be holding up! Eager to figure out if it floats! We will definitely buy this high quality toy again!

Too hard and heavy.
Color: Fowl Play
Very cute idea but my dog was not at all interested. It’s too hard for her to chew on. She didn’t even care enough about it to rip the outside. It’s hard and heavy. I will stick with the non-super chewer bark toys. They don’t last as long, but she loves them.
