Curio rowleyanus

Curio rowleyanus, widely known as string of pearls, is a trailing succulent with thin stems lined by small spherical leaves. Each bead stores water, giving the plant its rounded texture and making the strands instantly recognisable in hanging pots and raised displays.

The stems trail from the pot or creep across the surface, rooting where nodes touch a suitable substrate. Indoors, Curio rowleyanus develops steadily when the crown receives strong light, the root zone dries cleanly between watering, and excess water leaves the planter quickly.

Curio rowleyanus plant highlights

  • Classic string-of-pearls succulent with round, pea-like leaves
  • Trailing stems that can hang from pots or root along the substrate surface
  • Succulent foliage with a narrow translucent line on each bead
  • Small white flowerheads may appear on mature plants under bright, settled conditions
  • Naturally suited to hanging planters, bright shelves, and shallow succulent bowls

Curio rowleyanus bead form and trailing habit

Curio rowleyanus is native to South Africa’s Cape region and is recorded from dry habitats where trailing stems can move along the ground and root at contact points. Its spherical leaves reduce exposed surface area while storing moisture. Indoors, healthy growth depends on strong crown light, careful watering and a breathable substrate.

The round leaves have a small pointed tip and a narrow translucent stripe. For container culture, the crown is the key area to monitor because crowded stems and damp substrate can hold moisture around new growth. A bright, open top surface and light grooming help maintain dense growth from the centre.

Curio rowleyanus care essentials

  • Light: Provide very bright indirect light with some gentle direct sun. East, west, or a bright south-facing position set back from hot glass can suit it well.
  • Watering: Water deeply after the substrate has dried through. Pearls that feel slightly less firm can indicate thirst; consistently soft pearls suggest root or moisture stress.
  • Substrate: Plant in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with pumice, lava rock, grit, or coarse sand. The fine roots depend on oxygen as well as moisture.
  • Drainage: Always use a pot with drainage holes. Hanging pots can dry unevenly, so check the crown and lower substrate before watering.
  • Temperature: Keep Curio rowleyanus warm during active growth, around 18–27 °C. A cooler winter position above 10 °C with drier conditions can support seasonal rest.
  • Humidity: Normal room air suits this succulent. Light, drainage and crown airflow matter more than raising humidity.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly in spring and summer with diluted succulent fertiliser. Excess nutrients can push soft, stretched growth.
  • Pruning: Trim overly long strands to keep the pot balanced. Fresh cuttings can be used to fill the crown or start a new pot.
  • Propagation: Set stem cuttings onto barely moist gritty substrate and pin the nodes against the surface until roots form.
  • Repotting: Renew the mix once roots fill the container or the substrate breaks down. Handle the strands gently because the beads detach easily.

Curio rowleyanus issue guide

  • Crown rot: Check for damp, compacted substrate around the top of the pot. Increase light, improve airflow, and remove any soft stems quickly.
  • Shrivelled pearls: Check whether the pot is dry and whether roots are active. A full soak helps when roots are healthy; damaged roots need fresh cuttings and drier care.
  • Stretched stems: Raise the light level and make sure brightness reaches the crown along with the trailing growth.
  • Falling beads: Review watering rhythm, handling, and heat exposure. Sudden dryness, rough movement, or overheated glass can all cause leaf drop.
  • Mealybugs and aphids: Inspect between beads, along stems, and near flowerheads. Treat early before pests hide in dense growth.

Curio rowleyanus household precautions

Curio rowleyanus is toxic if ingested and should be kept away from pets and children. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wash hands after pruning and avoid touching eyes after handling cut stems.

Curio rowleyanus naming note

Curio rowleyanus is an accepted species in Asteraceae and was formerly known as Senecio rowleyanus. Curio is commonly explained from Latin curiosus, meaning “curious,” reflecting the unusual succulent forms in this group. The epithet rowleyanus honours Gordon Douglas Rowley, a botanist and well-known succulent specialist.

In a hanging pot, Curio rowleyanus forms long classic string-of-pearls trails of rounded succulent beads.

6'1" 280+ with a middle, and 3x is perfect
Size: 3X-Large, Color: Antique Indigo
Naturally, this arrived stiff and the arms were a little long, but a hot wash and hot dry softened it perfectly and brought the sleeves up just enough. Jean jackets just have to break in. I slept in it last night to form it to my body although my wife thought I was nuts. These aren't warm jackets, but if you're my size 3x will leave just enough room for layers. Of course, the jacket will become a best friend like all the others have. It'll just take some time. I've seen complaints about the buttons and, yes, they'll also need to break in too. But they will!

Like Steve McQueen, all I need's a fast machine...
Size: Medium, Color: Vintage Indigo
I was very impressed by the quality of the Vintage Indigo (distressed) jacket I received. Much heavier denim than Levi's, rugged stitching, classic fit that is also much better than the relaxed Levi's available on Amazon. The inside pockets are generous and sturdy but have no closure flap so if you bent over enough I suppose things could fall out. This jacket is pretty bombproof if you ask me and at half the price of Levi's. I only wish that they made this in size small, which I can't find anywhere. I am 5'9" and 170 lbs, athletic build. I like a high and tight fit on these like Steve McQueen would have rocked, the shoulders and sleeves on this medium size are a bit oversized, the body is just a tad more relaxed and longer than I would like. Most guys would probably be very pleased with this medium. It would work very well over sweaters and such. Update: I ordered the Lee Boss Man vintage style jacket in Medium, it's much tighter fitting than this Wrangler and the vintage wash is much more convincing. The Lee is a much trimmer fit, tight across the shoulders and through the sleeves, slim on the body. It's more the Steve McQueen look I was searching for so it's a keeper. No room for sweaters under the Lee and the denim is much lighter weight than the Wrangler. Lee's the one for me. This Wrangler is very good quality but not quite the fit for me so it goes back. Thankfully Amazon makes returns free and easy so you can try every brand.

Size & fit great
Size: Large, Color: Vintage Indigo
The fit of the jean jacket was as described. I did order a large. I am 5'11'' The sleeves were Not long they were the proper length and came to my wrist as they should have. The color was a little darker than the picture but still a nice washed-out blue. Looking forward to years of wearing this jacket. The jacket is high quality with excellent stitching. I am a consumer and was not compensated for this review.

Runs a little large
Size: X-Large Tall, Color: Antique Indigo
Awesome jacket! I am a vintage Lee Rider jacket man since high school. All Made in USA from denim Made in USA. Oldest from High School. Think I bought a Wrangler jacket once and it was not fitted like a Rider, boxy and baggy. Returned it. Wanted to try a Wrangler or Levi jacket after wearing Lee jackets for over 50 years. Modern Lee are Lee by name. After reading a 100 reviews the Wrangler reviews were consistent. The Levi reviews were all over the place, small, large, thin, thick, all cotton, stretch, made no telling where. Ordered this jacket. Ordered a XL Tall. Usually wear a XXL. But running large was a consistent comment. Sized to fit a hoodie under. Built odd, 48 jacket, 37 shirt sleeves, 36 pants are loose fit. The sized down jacket fits a little loose. May shrink down a little, washed twice yesterday. But like all Bangladesh made clothes I have owned the quality is equal to my 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s Made in USA Lee Rider jackets. The denim is top quality, the stitching is even and well done. Not as slick as my Diamond Gusset denim jacket on finishing inside, think 700.00 suit coat quality, but equal to any of my five Lee jackets. This is a Tough Wear and not an Italian suit coat. Living in Houston we only see a month or two of jacket weather a year. Wearing shorts and tee shirt today. So stores do not stock year round. Amazon was a gamble on size and quality. Looked before ordering, no stores had jackets in stock after first of the year to try size and fit. I got lucky. Fit like a XXL Lee Rider or Diamond Gusset. Quality of denim and construction are top notch. Much recommended, just order down on size if you are borderline on sizes.
