Bring a bold, tropical statement to your garden with a Japanese Banana (Musa basjoo) plant. One of the easiest to grow and most resilient banana plants out there, prized for its lush, architectural foliage and surprising ability to thrive both indoors and outdoors year-round in the UK.

Perfect for creating an exotic, tropical feel to your garden, patio or bright indoor space, this fast-growing plant produces large, vivid green leaves that unfurl dramatically throughout spring and summer. Although it will only produce small, inedible fruits, its bold architectural foliage more than compensates, quickly transforming any setting into a lush, jungle-like retreat.

Musa basjoo is particularly notable for its cultural heritage in Japan, where it is valued not for its fruit but for its leaves. These broad, flexible leaves have traditionally been used in Japanese cooking as a natural, biodegradable food wrap, ideal for enclosing rice, fish or dumplings before steaming or grilling.

The leaves can be harvested during the growing season to impart a subtle, fresh aroma and help retain moisture during cooking. They can also be used as a simple, natural way to display dishes, adding a distinctive, organic touch that stands out on the table.

Growing information:

Location: Best grown in full sun in a warm, sheltered spot to maximise leaf size and overall impact. Will tolerate light shade, though growth may be less vigorous. Ideal against a south or west-facing wall where it benefits from retained heat and protection from wind.

Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of organic matter before planting. Adaptable to most UK soil types, including clay, provided drainage is improved.

Watering: Water regularly throughout the spring and summer to keep the soil consistently moist. Reduce watering in the autumn and winter when growth slows.

Feeding: Benefits from generous feeding during the growing season. Apply a balanced fertiliser or high-nitrogen feed from spring to late summer to support the large leaf growth.

Hardiness: Hardy in milder parts of the UK down to around -3°C, especially in sheltered positions.

Please note that only the underground roots are reliably hardy. To preserve the height and structure of the plant, the trunk should be protected in winter with straw or horticultural fleece. If left unprotected, any above-ground growth may die back to ground level, and the plant will then regrow from the base in spring.

Winter Care: Cut back damaged foliage after the first frost and protect the crown with a thick mulch. In colder areas, wrap the stem with fleece or straw to preserve height. Even if top growth is lost, the plant will reliably reshoot from the base.

Indoor Growing: Can also be grown indoors or in a conservatory when young or in containers. Place in a bright, well-lit position with plenty of space as its large leaves need room to develop. Growth may be more compact indoors, but it still makes an impressive architectural houseplant.

Growth Rate & Size: Extremely fast-growing. Can reach 2–4 m (6–13 ft) in a single season in ideal conditions, eventually forming large clumps up to 5 m tall with a spread of 2–4 m.

Habit & Lifecycle: This is a herbaceous perennial rather than a true tree as the “trunk” is formed from tightly wrapped leaf bases. In the UK it behaves like a die-back perennial unless protected, regrowing vigorously each spring.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, approximately 30cm tall, ready to plant.

Not comparable to the bars
Flavor Name: Chicken Sriracha, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I often get the chicken Sriracha bars, so I thought this is a more economical way to get that bit of protein. However, these are extremely different than the bars. They are thinner, obviously, and that makes the whole bar drier and... I'm not sure how to describe it, it almost tastes like plastic. Overall, I'll get the bars any day, but these I really can't stomach. On the spiciness side, I think they're pretty balanced. My husband, who doesn't tolerate heat well, likes them, so I'd say they're mild spice. But I personally cannot get over the plastic flavor.

For the chicken go with the bars, not the strips.
Flavor Name: Chicken Sriracha, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I really enjoyed the larger Sriracha bars, as they were an excellent combo of spicy, salty, and juicy. Bought these strips under the assumption they'd be the same. Not even close. No detectable salt, only the barest hint of spice (you can sort-of get the spice back if you eat a large chunk and chew it for around a minute), and the flavor when you first stick it in your mouth is dry and interrupted by a weird plastic-like taste for the first ten seconds or so. Since it's food I can't return them. At $40 it's an expensive lesson learned. Go with the bars, not the strips.
