The Bolivian Torch cactus, botanically known as Trichocereus bridgesii, is a fast-growing, columnar cactus prized for its tall, sculptural form and low-maintenance care. Native to Bolivia, this striking species has become a favorite among cactus enthusiasts and indoor plant collectors alike for its clean lines, soft green-to-bluish tones, and impressive height potential.

In 1974, Friedrich and Rowley merged the genus Echinopsis and reclassified it as Echinopsis lageniformis, which also has the common name Achuma.

The Bolivian Torch stands out for its ribbed stems lined with small clusters of spines and its ability to grow much faster than many other cacti. Under the right conditions, it can reach heights of up to 16 feet, making it a bold statement plant in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Flowers are one of the most captivating features of the Bolivian Torch cactus.

Large, white, trumpet-shaped blooms appear during the warmer months, typically opening at night and releasing a light, pleasant fragrance.

These short-lived flowers often last just a day or two, but when several bloom at once, they create a striking display while attracting nighttime pollinators like moths.

One of its most fascinating variations is the monstrose form, Trichocereus bridgesii ‘Monstrose,’ known for its unusual, knobby growth pattern instead of straight vertical columns, making it especially popular among collectors.

With its unique appearance, rapid growth, and relatively easy care requirements, the Bolivian Torch cactus is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant lovers looking to add a distinctive touch to their collection.

When and How to Water Your Bolivian Torch Cactus

Your Bolivian Torch cactus prefers infrequent watering to mimic its natural desert environment. It thrives on the “soak and dry” method, so make sure that after watering the plant allow the soil to completely dry out before watering again.

The Trichocereus bridgesii should be watered every 10-14 days during the growing season, with minimal watering 3-4 weeks during the dormant season.

In the spring and summer, water deeply until excess water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Make sure the soil is completely dry before watering again, as overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. Always use well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to keep the roots healthy..

In the fall and winter, reduce watering significantly since the cactus slows its growth. Only water when the soil has been dry for an extended period. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which can cause fungal infections or other diseases. Watch for signs like slight wrinkling, which may indicate the plant needs water, but avoid watering too often to prevent damage

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Bolivian Torch Cactus

When growing indoors, the Bolivian Torch cactus thrives in bright, indirect light. Place your cactus near a sunny window where it can receive plenty of natural light for at least 6-8 hours a day.

However, it's important to avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, as this can cause the plant to become sunburned.

If your indoor space does not get enough light, you can use a grow light to support healthy growth and maintain its upright, columnar form.

When growing outdoors, choose a spot with plenty of sunlight. The Bolivian Torch cactus enjoys full sun to partial sun and grows best when it receives at least 6–8 hours of light daily.

Make sure the outdoor area has well draining soil to prevent water from sitting around the roots. If you are moving your cactus outdoors for the first time, gradually introduce it to direct sunlight to avoid shock or burning. If the sun becomes too harsh, especially in very hot climates, provide light shade during peak hours.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Bolivian Torch cactus favors very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally, use our specialized potting mixGo to soil cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media that contains over 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your torch cactus to thrive.

When it comes to fertilizing your torch cactus, a balanced, low-strength NPK fertilizer applied once per year during the actively growing season, which is typically spring, promotes steady growth. To encourage strong root development, use a diluted NPK fertilizer in an equal ratio of 5-10-5, with a slightly higher phosphorus content.

During the cooler months, reduce or stop fertilizing altogether, as the Bolivian Torch cactus enters a dormant phase. Feeding during this period can lead to weak or stretched growth and may stress the plant.

Hardiness Zones & More

The Bolivian cactus is generally considered hardy in USDA zones 8–11.

The mature plants can tolerate brief temperature drops to around freezing, 32°F, if kept completely dry, though they are not frost-hardy in the long term.

In the United States, it is most commonly grown as an indoor plant, but in frost-free regions such as Southern Florida and Hawaii, it can be successfully cultivated outdoors.

This cactus thrives in temperatures above 50°F for consistent, healthy growth. Extended exposure to frost or freezing conditions can damage or kill the plant.

In terms of humidity, this Bolivian Torch plant prefers low to moderate levels, similar to its native habitat. It adapts well to typical indoor conditions as long as there is good airflow, which helps prevent excess moisture buildup and reduces the risk of fungal issues.

How to Grow as a Houseplant

When growing your Bolivian Torch cactus indoors, this cactus thrives in moderate to warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 85°F, where it can grow steadily and stay healthy. Place it in a spot with intense light, ideally within 1 foot of a south facing window so it gets plenty of sun throughout the day.Water it thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out, since overwatering can quickly lead to root rot, especially during winter.

It does best in low humidity levels around 30% to 50%, which makes it perfect for typical indoor conditions. Keep an eye on its appearance, if it turns yellow or develops brown spots, it may be getting too much direct sun, while a stretched or thin shape means it needs more light.

Wildlife -  Bolivian Torch Cactus Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Bolivian torch flowers can attract friendly pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects. These pollinators play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in the reproduction of plants and ensuring biodiversity.

Butterflies
Bees
Hummingbirds
Lady Bugs
Multi Pollinators
Other Birds

According to ASPCA, the trichocereus bridgesii is mildly toxic to humans or pets. It is wise to keep the plant out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental contact or ingestion.

How to Propagate Your Cactus

It is easy to propagate your Bolivian cactus by stem cuttings. The best time to do this is during the growing season in spring or summer when the plant is actively growing. Choose a healthy, mature stem and use a clean, sharp knife to make a cut. Let the cutting dry and callous for 1-2 weeks.

Once the cut end has fully dried, place the cutting in a pot with well draining cactus soil. Wait about a week before lightly watering, then continue watering only when the soil is completely dry. Keep the cutting in a bright area with indirect light while it establishes roots.

No annoying "Disk not ejected properly" messages!
Color: Space grey
I use these with MacBook Airs, both Intel and Apple M3, and they stay connected. Previous —cheaper—dongles kept disconnecting with no apparent moving of the computer or the dongle. I'd get the annoying "Disk not ejected properly" message repeatedly, meaning I'd have to remove the dongle plug, reinsert it, and hope that the external device showed up on the computer and stayed connected. These always stay connected and seem to work well for the external devices I use. I think it's in the plug: with the Acer, I hear a distinct little click when the plug is fully inserted—perhaps some subtle locking mechanism the cheaper dongles did not have.

Instantly addressed a defective unit
Color: Space grey
2nd EDIT: Not only did the company offer a refund, they also generously shipped me another unit, and it works just as it should! They gave fast responses when the first unit gave me issues, and addressed it as well as you possibly could. I would use them any time! EDIT: the company quickly reached out and offered a full refund as a result of a faulty product. For me, that goes a long way. I have plenty of ACER products and normally have no issues with them. could have just been a faulty single product. Very bummed. For the first 2 hours of use it worked great. When it’s just USB-C to HDMI connected it works fine, but the second I go to plug my Mac in, while using the HDMI to stream to my monitor, the screen begins flashing every second or two on both my Mac, and the monitor. The flashing screen is happening at the same time the Mac keeps making its “chime” that the charger is connected, over and over again. Clearly something is going on that the charging is not staying active. whenever the charger is first connected it causes a quick(ish)black screen, which I could live with if it just happened right as I plugged the charger in… but when the charger KEEPS thinkings it’s just getting plugged in over and over, and keeps flashing, it kind of makes the product useless. And I’ve already thrown the box away so I guess I’m stuck with a product that doesn’t work. Super bummer.

Beyond Impressed
Color: Space grey
I recently picked up the Acer 7-in-1 USB-C Hub and I have to say, I am beyond impressed with its performance and functionality. As someone who frequently uses a laptop for both work and personal tasks, this little device has completely changed the way I connect my peripherals and external devices. What I Love: Compact Design & Build Quality: Despite packing so many ports into such a small form factor, the Acer USB-C Hub is surprisingly lightweight yet feels sturdy. The sleek aluminum finish not only looks professional but also helps keep things cool during extended use. It’s incredibly portable and fits easily in my bag alongside my laptop. Wide Range of Ports: This hub includes 7 different ports, which is a dream for anyone who needs to expand their connectivity. It includes: HDMI port (4K support) for connecting to external monitors or TVs, USB 3.0 ports (two) for fast data transfer or connecting peripherals like keyboards, mice, or external hard drives, SD and MicroSD card readers (perfect for photographers or videographers), Ethernet port for reliable wired internet connections (a must for stable work-from-home setups), USB-C power delivery port for charging your laptop while using the hub. Whether you're using it for office tasks, media consumption, or creative work, this hub has you covered. Plug & Play: I’m a huge fan of how easy this hub is to use. There’s no need for extra drivers or software. Simply plug it into your USB-C port, and it’s ready to go! My MacBook, Windows laptop, and even my tablet all recognized the device instantly without any issues. Fast and Stable Performance: I’ve tested the data transfer speeds using both USB drives and external hard drives, and the speeds are consistently fast. The HDMI output worked seamlessly, delivering crisp 4K video to my TV without any lag or glitches. The Ethernet connection is a lifesaver when I need a stable internet connection for remote work or video calls. Affordable Price: Considering the versatility and quality, the price of this hub is a steal! Many hubs in this range only offer a handful of ports, but Acer’s 7-in-1 gives you a full suite of connectivity options at a great value. A Couple of Notes: Heat Management: During extended use, the hub can get a little warm, especially if you're using the HDMI output or transferring large files. However, it never got hot enough to be a concern, and it hasn’t impacted performance at all. Compatibility: While it works perfectly with laptops that have a USB-C port with power delivery, make sure your device supports it for full functionality. I haven’t had any issues with my devices, but it’s always a good idea to check your specs. Final Verdict: The Acer 7-in-1 USB-C Hub is an absolute game-changer for anyone looking to maximize their laptop’s connectivity. It’s a perfect solution for professionals, creatives, and anyone who needs to connect multiple devices without the clutter of extra adapters. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to simplify their tech setup while maintaining top-notch performance! If you're looking for a versatile, high-quality USB-C hub, this is the one to get.

Works as intended
I've been into emulators lately and this is a great HDMI out with charging capabilities to go with your high speed charging brick. Doesn't work for everything, but I can attest it works with the AYN Thor and a Google Pixel 8 Pro, and presumably higher end Pixels. Both have emulators and both come thru my TV just fine. Also works with Kodi. I tried to use wired controllers, but quickly figured I'm better off going Bluetooth on that route. I haven't tried file transfer or anything because all that mattered to me was getting it to the big screen. I'd rather have a docking stand for my needs, but freedom and flexibility isn't a bad thing for this device at a decent price and cheaper than a dock.

Versatile hub adds the ports my Mac lacks
This 7-in-1 USB C hub from Anker has made it easy to connect my laptop to all the devices I need. The HDMI port consistently outputs 4K video at 60Hz, while the USB 3.0 ports and SD/microSD slots transfer files quickly without errors. I appreciate that the pass-through charging allows me to power my MacBook while using the hub, and the unit itself feels solid and well made. It's truly plug-and-play, with no drivers to install, and it greatly expands the limited port selection on modern laptops. The only minor drawback is that the hub can get a little warm under heavy use, but overall it's a reliable, convenient accessory that I feel confident recommending.
