Philodendron 'Snowdrift' is a rare climbing hybrid, probably a cross between Philodendron pinnatifidum and Philodendron giganteum . Known for its unique mottled foliage, this cultivar produces pale, almost white juvenile leaves that gradually turn to marbled light green as they mature.
Many say that Snowdrift is the variegated version of Philodendron 'Jungle Fever'. It is not a particularly fast-growing plant, but each new leaf is unique, making the wait for new growth worth it.
The plant is a slow to moderate climber that requires a moss stake to reach its full potential indoors. Leaf size and color intensity are greatly enhanced when the plant is allowed to climb.
The unpredictable marbling and steady vertical growth make it a valuable addition for collectors seeking texture and color contrast in their indoor jungle. The name 'Snowdrift' refers to its bright, mottled juvenile leaves that are reminiscent of snow-covered surfaces.
Botanical description
The genus name Philodendron combines the Greek "philo" (love) and "dendron" (tree), referring to the plants' natural affinity for climbing trees. 'Snowdrift' is also sometimes called 'Green Moss' variegata based on its mottled, misty green finish at maturity.
The cultivar has stable genetic variegation with mottled, cloud-like patterns that are not seasonal or light-triggered. Mature leaves can exceed 60 centimeters in length with proper support and care.
Care
Philodendron 'Snowdrift' prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid strong midday sun to prevent leaf stress. Tolerates shade but grows more slowly. If so, use a grow light.
Allow the top 10-15% of the substrate to dry before watering. Make sure excess water drains freely to prevent rot. Avoid compacted, wet soil and water less frequently in lower light conditions.
Use a coarse, porous mixture of coconut fiber or orchid bark and perlite. Feed with diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth. Avoid over-fertilizing which can damage the delicate variegated tissue.
The plant thrives best at 60%+ humidity. Increase humidity levels if leaf edges turn brown or curl. It adapts to normal indoor humidity but thrives at 60% or higher.
Keep the temperature between 18-27°C. Protect from drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Train the plant along a moss stake to promote larger leaves and an upright shape. Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow light to pass through.
Remove yellowed or faded leaves to maintain a neat appearance. Propagate by stem cuttings with at least one node. Root in water, sphagnum moss or semi-hydro under high humidity. Buy Philodendron Snowdrift online!
