Dichorisandra thyrsiflora, commonly known as Blue Ginger, is a tropical evergreen perennial prized for its vibrant spikes of cobalt-blue flowers and lush, glossy green foliage. Though not a true ginger, its tall, upright growth and exotic appearance lend a bold, tropical flair to shaded gardens. Blooming from late summer to early winter, Blue Ginger reaches a height of 1–2 meters, making it perfect as a feature plant, in borders, or as a striking accent in tropical landscapes.

Position

Blue Ginger thrives in partial to full shade and prefers rich, well-drained, moist soil. It performs best in warm, humid, tropical and subtropical climates, where it can be grown year-round. In cooler regions, it should be protected from frost, or grown as an indoor plant or in containers that can be moved to a sheltered spot in winter.

Growth

This moderate-growing perennial reaches a mature height of 1–2 meters with a spread of about 0.5–1 meter. Its tall, upright form, lush green leaves, and stunning blue flower spikes make it an excellent choice for adding height, colour, and texture to shaded garden beds or as a specimen plant in tropical-themed gardens.

Planting Guide

Dichorisandra thyrsiflora grows best in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter to retain moisture. Plant in spring, spacing plants about 60–80 cm apart to allow for full growth. For container planting, use a high-quality, moisture-retentive potting mix, and position the container in a shaded or indirect light location. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture.

Plant Care

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during hot or dry periods, as Blue Ginger prefers a humid environment. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and prolific blooming. Prune any dead or damaged stems and remove spent flower spikes to encourage a tidy appearance and potential reblooming. In cooler climates, consider mulching around the base to protect roots from cold temperatures or move the plant indoors in winter.
