Also known as “Hens and Chicks,” these delightful succulents are a great addition to any garden. Let me share some interesting facts about them:
-
What Are Hens and Chicks?
- The name “Hens and Chicks” comes from the way these plants grow. The “hen” refers to the larger, central rosette (the mother), while the “chicks” are the smaller rosettes that grow around it.
- They’re called “always living” (Sempervivum) because they thrive even in challenging conditions.
- Originally from southern Europe and northern Africa, they’ve been cultivated for centuries and were brought to western Europe by the Romans.
-
Propagation and Growth:
- Hens and Chicks produce offsets (chicks) on long stolons. These offsets can be easily separated, allowing the plant to multiply and seemingly live forever.
- They’re monocarpic, meaning the mother plant will eventually expire after blooming, but the chicks quickly fill in the space left behind.
-
Care Tips:
- Low-maintenance plants: They thrive with minimal attention.
- Provide well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight.
- Water sparingly and avoid overfeeding with nutrients.
