Introducing the stunning Elephant's Trunk plant, which is also known as the Pachypodium namaquanum, a vibrant member of the Pachypodium genus.

The Elephant's Trunk plant gets its name from its unique, thick stem that resembles an elephant's trunk. This stem is covered in sharp spines, which act as a defense mechanism against herbivores.

When fully grown, the Pachypodium namaquanum can reach impressive heights of up to 16 feet in its natural habitat. However, when grown as a houseplant, it tends to stay smaller, usually around 6 feet.

The Pachypodium namaquanum is also called club foot and "Halfmens" or "Half-human" plant, which is derived from its unique appearance.

The name "Half humans" originates from the Afrikaans language spoken in Southern Africa. It is called so because its tall, upright stem resembles a human figure, with the lower portion resembling the trunk of an elephant.

The Elephant trunk plant is a warty tree with a tapering top and thickset base that is heavily covered in sharp spines. Where damaged, the trunk produces side branches that immediately curve back in a slightly downward direction. At the same time, the very top of this Pachypodium namaquanum is usually bent to the north. During the growing season, which lasts through the winter, there is a crown or tuft of densely velvety undulate leaves at the top of the trunk.

The flowers of your elephant trunk plant are typically white or cream-colored, with red on the inside and yellow-green on the outside. The petals have dark red tips. The tubular, velvet-textured flowers appear during the summer and result in twin seedpods in a V shape. The flowers are known to be fragrant, emitting a sweet scent that attracts pollinators.

When and How to Water Elephants Trunk Plant

When it comes to watering the Pachypodium namaquanum Elephant's Trunk plant, it's important to find the right balance. This Elephant trunk plant is native to arid regions, so it's adapted to survive with less water. The Pachypodium namaquanum prefers to be slightly on the drier side. It's best to let the soil dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's better to underwater than overwater your succulent.

Always check the soil's moisture level before watering. When you insert your finger approximately one inch into the soil, and it feels dry, it's time to water. If it still seems moist, wait a few more days before watering.

When you do water, make sure to give Pachypodium namaquanum a good soak. The Elephants trunk plant prefers moderate watering during the growing season, in the winter. Don't overwater; just enough water will cover the soil evenly. Allow any excess water to drain away, as sitting in water can cause root problems.

Remember, the watering needs of the your plant can vary depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and the size of the pot. It's always a good idea to observe your succulent and adjust your watering routine accordingly.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Pachypodium namaquanum

When growing your Pachypodium namaquanum Elephant's Trunk plant indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. Its leaves may become scorched if you expose it to direct sunlight. If you don't have access to a well-lit area, you can supplement it with artificial grow lights to provide the necessary light for its growth.

If you decide to grow your Elephant's Trunk plant outdoors, your Pachypodium namaquanum prefers light shade to dappled sunlight, as direct sunlight can be too intense.

Look for an area that receives bright, indirect light or a few hours of morning or evening sun. You can also consider placing it under a tree or a shaded patio where it can benefit from filtered sunlight.

Remember that finding the right balance of light is crucial for the health and growth of your Elephant's Trunk plant. Observing how it responds to its current lighting conditions and making adjustments accordingly will help you provide the ideal environment for its growth.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Pachypodium prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in Pachypodium namaquanum succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

The Elephant's Trunk plant doesn't require frequent fertilization. During the spring, you can fertilize it once a year with a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer. Make sure to dilute the fertilizer according to the instructions to avoid overfeeding the elephant's trunk plant.

It's important not to overfertilize your Pachypodium namaquanum, as this can lead to nutrient burn and damage to its roots. Always follow the recommended dosage and err on the side of under-fertilizing rather than over-fertilizing.

Remember to always check the soil moisture before fertilizing. Like other plants, it's best to fertilize when the soil is slightly moist, not when it's completely dry or waterlogged.

Hardiness Zone & More

The Elephant's Trunk plant prefers indoor temperatures between 60°F and 80°F. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but it's important to protect it from frost and freezing conditions. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperature fluctuations, as this can stress your Pachypodium namaquanum and affect its growth.

When growing outdoors, your  Elephant's Trunk plant is typically suitable for growing in USDA zones 10-12, as in Southern Florida and Hawaii outdoor year-round.

These zones are characterized by mild to warm climates, where temperatures rarely drop below freezing.

If you live in a colder region, you can still grow the Elephant's Trunk plant indoors or in a greenhouse to provide it with the warmth it needs.

The Pachypodium namaquanum appreciates moderate to high humidity levels. Aim for a humidity range of 40-60% to create a comfortable environment for your plant. If the air in your home or region is dry, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves with water or placing a tray of water near the Pachypodium namaquanum to allow for evaporation.

Remember, providing the right temperature and humidity conditions is essential for the health and well-being of your Pachypodium namaquanum. Monitoring these factors and making adjustments, when necessary, will help ensure its optimal growth.

A Perfect Throw Blanket For Your Lounging Area
I absolutely love this throw blanket, I sleep with it every night. It is incredibly soft and looks very nice laid out on a bed or couch. The size of it is perfect to cover me up, as im on the shorter side (5'4). It holds up well in a washing machine and dryer too. It keeps me nice and warm at night without getting overheated. Overall this blanket is a great addition to my home that I bought one for my husband and our daughter as well. I really like these blankets and think theyre worth their value.

Extra Cozy, Generously Sized, and Perfect for Snuggling
This throw blanket is an excellent buy. The price is great, and the sizing is even better than expected. It’s listed as 50 by 60 inches, and while the width is right at 50 inches, the length is definitely longer, closer to about 63 or 64 inches. You can see in my photos that it goes past the full length of my tape measure, which even has an extra couple of inches at the end with no markings. That extra length is a nice bonus. As for comfort, it absolutely lives up to the description. It’s warm, fluffy, and incredibly soft. It’s one of those blankets you just want to wrap up in and stay there. Perfect for getting cozy on the couch. I do have some larger throw blankets, and while those are great when you want something more like a full blanket, this size is much better as an actual throw. It’s very manageable, covers you generously, and still looks neat and intentional draped over a couch or chair instead of looking like a full blanket left out. The stitching is well done with no loose threads anywhere, and the overall quality feels really nice. It’s light but substantial and cozy enough to warm you up and definitely take the chill off. The white color is especially beautiful. It looks clean, fresh, and honestly feels like being wrapped in a fluffy cloud. It also comes packaged very nicely, making it a great option for gifting. This is a super cozy, well-made blanket with generous sizing and a great price. Definitely a five-star purchase.

Soft, Cozy, and Great Value Blanket
I bought this throw blanket for the couch and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It arrived shrink wrapped, so at first it looked a bit flat, but once I opened it and let it fluff up, it became really soft and cozy. The microfiber material feels smooth and gentle on the skin, and the flannel fleece texture adds extra warmth without feeling heavy. I’ve been using it while relaxing in the evenings, and it’s the perfect balance of lightweight and warm. The striped design gives it a nice, clean look that works well with different decor styles. It also seems well made, with good stitching and no loose threads so far. For the price, it’s an excellent find. It looks good, feels comfortable, and is great for everyday use on the couch or even as an extra layer on the bed.

Like a Cloud! Very Nice Quality!
This throw is one of the nicest at this price point I've ever ordered. There are throws you get that you use every day and throws you get for decor and a statement. This is a very nice statement piece! I'm older with no pets and white doesn't scare me anymore. I wanted a great throw for my dark grey couch to set off my throw pillows and to just brighten up the space. This is a nice THICK throw, its fluffy compared to most throws in the $20-$30 price range and costs less! It is a 100% polyester fabric and will wash well every time. Simply designed with long puffy stripes and a nice texture they are not thin. It's a warm throw without being heavy at all. I would definitely buy others but only needed one in white this was a great value! It did not disappoint it was more than I expected!

Lightweight, cozy, and doesn't shed!
If you want a cozy faux fur blanket that doesn't shed, you need to get this one! Usually blankets that have a texture this fine are prone to leaving lint all over my clothes and my dryer, but this one didn't. And yes, it held up to the wash and dryer just fine - washed with delicate cycle on cold, dried with air fluff cycle on warm. It's lightweight while still being cozy, and I like that it's textured on both sides. My wife describes it as "cuddly" and that pretty much sums it up. It's the perfect size for a couch blanket especially on cool spring days when you don't need a super heavy throw, but still want to keep your feet warm. It also comes tied up with a ribbon, so it'd be easy to gift right out of the plastic packaging.
