The Foxtail Palm is a visually striking and culturally significant palm native to the Cape Melville region of Queensland. It is celebrated for its bushy, foxtail-like fronds and smooth, self-cleaning trunk. Growing to around 10 meters tall, it is highly sought after for landscaping due to its elegant form, low maintenance requirements, and adaptability to warm climates.

Quick Overview:

  • Height: Typically reaches about 10 meters
  • Trunk: Smooth, slender, and self-cleaning
  • Leaves: Bushy pinnate leaves with finely divided segments resembling a fox’s tail
  • Flowers: White flower stalks produced from the base of the crown shaft
  • Fruit: Bright orange to red, but poisonous and inedible
  • Origin: Endemic to the boulder-strewn gravel hills of Cape Melville National Park, Cape York, Queensland
  • Name Origin: Wodyetia is named in honour of Wodyeti, the Aboriginal man who introduced the species to botanists in 1978; bifurcata means "divided into two parts," referencing the forking fibres around the seeds

Detailed Description:
The Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) is a solitary palm native to a small and rugged area within Cape Melville National Park in far north Queensland. It was unknown to the scientific world until 1978, when it was introduced by Wodyeti, a local Aboriginal man. This rare discovery quickly rose to international horticultural fame, and the palm has since become a staple of tropical and subtropical landscaping.

Characterised by a slender, smooth trunk that self-sheds old fronds, the Foxtail Palm presents a tidy and elegant silhouette. Atop the trunk is a crown of arching, plume-like fronds made up of numerous narrow leaflets, creating the full, foxtail-like appearance that gives the palm its common name.

In suitable conditions, it produces attractive white flower stalks from the base of the crownshaft. These are followed by vibrant orange to red fruit, which, while ornamental, are toxic and should never be consumed.

The palm is highly adaptable to a range of tropical and subtropical conditions. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and while it enjoys regular watering during establishment, it becomes relatively drought-tolerant once mature. It is commonly used in residential gardens, public parks, and avenue plantings, thanks to its striking appearance and ease of care.

Growth and Maintenance

  • Position: Full sun preferred; can tolerate light shade
  • Watering: Moderate water needs during establishment; drought-tolerant once mature
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil; avoid waterlogging
  • Fertilization: Responds well to balanced, slow-release fertilizer, particularly in spring and summer
  • Maintenance: Old fronds drop cleanly from the trunk, reducing the need for pruning

Common Uses

  • Feature palm: Ideal as a focal point in tropical gardens or courtyard designs
  • Street and avenue planting: Widely used in urban landscapes due to its clean trunk and manageable size
  • Coastal gardens: Tolerates salty air and windy conditions
  • Cultural interest: Celebrated as a uniquely Australian species with a compelling discovery story

Planting Benefits

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Distinctive fronds and sleek trunk provide sculptural form and tropical charm
  • Low Maintenance: Self-cleaning habit reduces pruning and upkeep
  • Cultural Significance: Adds depth and meaning to plantings, linking to Australian heritage
  • Versatile Landscaping Choice: Suitable for residential, commercial, and public planting projects

The Foxtail Palm is not only a beautiful and easy-care tree but also a symbol of botanical discovery and cultural heritage. Whether used alone as a statement piece or in a row for symmetry, it brings elegance and resilience to any landscape.

reverse harem with heart and a HEA
Format: Kindle
Author duo Sasha Moon and Cassie Cole delivered a well written reverse harem romance read in Billionaire's Nanny. Our female lead Tessa starts as a server at an event and meets a sweet lil girl Tabitha. Damian is Tabitha's father and after the event all he hears about it Tessa and so, in his billionaire style shows up unannounced to offer Tessa a job as Tabitha's nanny that she can't refuse. Damian may be the beginning but there is also Theo, head of security and Nico, chauffeur and chef. These three go everywhere together. I love how our authors introduce us to the art world, exotic places traveled. They weave together the heat and sweet so well and I love that there is a storyline with mystery, heart just as much as the heat the characters bring. A wonderful HEA is to be had as well! A really good read! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

So many plot twists and turns!
Format: Kindle
In Billionaire's Nanny, Tessa is a catering waitress. While working an event, she encounters Tabitha, a precocious 6 year old who is bored and seeking her own form of entertainment when left to entertain herself at her father's event. Taking the child under her wings and keeping her out of trouble, little does Tessa know that with that simple act, the trajectory of her life will forever be altered. Damian is Tabitha's father. He's wildly successful in the art world and a billionaire. Theo is his body guard and head of security, while Nico is his chauffeur (of any form of transportation that moves) and personal chef. The three travel everywhere together. Damian is out to right the wrongs of the previous generations of his family. He wants his daughter to be proud of her legacy and he will do anything to ensure that she has this opportunity, even if it requires lying, stealing and riding the fine line between what is morally and legally right and wrong. In order to do this, he desperately needs the help of someone he trusts to watch over his daughter. Tabitha won't stop talking about Tessa and the time they spent together at the event. Without notice, Damian shows up on Tessa's doorstep and orders her to join them as Tabitha's nanny. Needing the money to help care for her siblings, Tessa agrees. What ensues is a quest for Tessa to learn who to trust. There is an air of mystery continually surrounding the three men that leaves Tessa feeling uneasy. Secretive meetings and phone calls. Continually jet setting from country to country. Locked vaults and rooms depicted on doll houses as nothing more than empty spaces. Who are these men? Are they good guys or bad? Tessa struggles with her growing feelings as she finds herself equally attracted to them all. As each man spends more time with Tessa and finds himself intrigued by her, each wants her for himself. These are three alpha males all vying for pole position in Tessa's heart. Little do they know, Tessa isn't interested in having only one in pole position. For her, it's all or nothing. Will they be able to give up ultimate control and learn to share? Authors Sasha Moon and Cassie Cole have done it again! This is an extremely well developed novel. Normally I am quick to determine the plot and the direction it's taking. If there's a mystery in a plot, I've usually solved it by 25% of the way into the book. The plot of this book was hard to guess, which is actually what makes this book so fantastic! I love the twists and the turns; the hint at explanations without actually not explaining much of anything at all. LOL It kept me engrossed and wanting to know what the heck was going on. The authors did a fabulous job of slowly dispersing tidbits of plot weaving intrigue and mystery throughout the entire length of the book. This book kept me focused the entire time I was reading it. I love that Tessa is a strong female lead. She isn't afraid to back down or ask questions when things don't make sense. She also has a soft side that just wants to be loved and to feel affection. She is like a mollusk, hard on the outside yet soft on the inside and in her heart. As much as she would like to trust, she has learned that you cannot blindly trust. So she asked questions. She watches. She tries to determine if her employer Damian is truly an individual that is upstanding and one whom she can trust with her life and her heart. The three men in the story are harder for the reader to get to know, especially Damian's character. The author slowly feeds you information with regards to their personalities, but even with the air of mystery surrounding them, there's something likeable about each of them. I couldn't help rooting for them all to get their HEA. This book is an absolute definite must read!

Not your average Billionaire's Nanny
Format: Kindle
A unique twist on a Billionaires Nanny plot. I was immediately drawn into the story and it kept me guessing on how it would unfold. The chemistry between Tessa, Damien, Theo and Nico was HOT. The spicy scenes were intense and everything you would expect from a Cassie Cole book. I had a difficult time connecting with Tessa. Some of her actions and unexplained entitlement to know everything going on around her seemed off to me but Theo was my absolute favorite.

Hot tamales!
Format: Kindle
So Nico, using food as his love language. Damien, stoic and mysterious. Theo strong and constant. All revolving around Tessa, whose more than just a nanny. Absolutely loved it. Steamy and packed with awe and wonder as they travel the world in the name of art. Couldn't put the story down.
