Production & Heritage

Solemn Oath Brewery operates a 15-barrel Premier Stainless three-vessel brewhouse in Naperville, a western suburb of Chicago. Between Two Pillows was developed as a collaboration with nearby Riverlands Brewing, combining both teams' experience with hop-forward, haze-driven styles. The grain bill leans on a generous addition of oats—internally nicknamed "Oats-Ma-Goats" by the brewery's director of brewing operations—to build the silky, pillowy body the name promises. The hop schedule layers six varieties across the process: Mosaic Incognito and LupoMax Mosaic deliver concentrated lupulin oil without added vegetal matter, while LupoMax Citra, standard Citra, Mosaic, and Strata round out the aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Passionfruit leads immediately, followed by waves of ripe blueberry and a cotton-candy sweetness that drifts underneath. A resinous, dank hop character rises as the beer warms, carrying grapefruit pith and tropical citrus.

Taste: The entry is soft and juice-forward, with passionfruit and stone fruit hitting first against the creamy, oat-driven mouthfeel. Mid-palate, a territorial wash of dank citrus hops asserts itself—think tangerine rind layered over pine resin. Bitterness is moderate for the style, landing slightly higher than many East Coast hazies and giving the beer structure rather than purely chasing sweetness.

Finish: Medium in length, with lingering tropical fruit and a gentle, dry hop bite that keeps it from feeling heavy. The oat backbone leaves a smooth, almost cottony texture on the lips.

How to Drink Between Two Pillows

Pour cold into a tulip glass or wide-mouth pint to open up the aromatics; this beer rewards a fresh, chilled serve straight from the can as well. It pairs well with casual, flavor-forward food. A fish taco with mango salsa mirrors the tropical hop character. A classic smash burger with sharp cheddar benefits from the beer's soft bitterness cutting through the fat. Spicy Thai basil chicken finds balance with the fruit-forward sweetness of the hops.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Between Two Pillows taste like? Between Two Pillows delivers a punch of passionfruit, blueberry, and cotton candy sweetness backed by dank citrus hops and a creamy, oat-softened body. It carries slightly more bitterness than many New England IPAs, giving it a balanced, not-just-juice character.

How does Between Two Pillows compare to other Solemn Oath IPAs? Solemn Oath produces a range of hop-forward beers, but Between Two Pillows stands apart as a collaboration brew with Riverlands Brewing that uses six hop varieties and a heavy oat bill for a distinctly pillowy mouthfeel. The result is juicier and more texturally rich than many of the brewery's standard IPA releases.

Is Between Two Pillows good for hazy IPA beginners? Yes—at 6.7% ABV it sits in an accessible range, and its fruit-forward profile with moderate bitterness makes it a welcoming entry point for drinkers new to the hazy IPA style.

Where is Between Two Pillows made? Between Two Pillows is brewed at Solemn Oath Brewery in Naperville, Illinois, located about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago. It was created in collaboration with Riverlands Brewing, also based in the greater Chicagoland area.

What foods pair well with Between Two Pillows? Fish tacos with citrus salsa echo the tropical hop notes. Grilled pork with a fruit glaze complements the passionfruit and blueberry character. Sharp cheddar or aged gouda contrasts the soft mouthfeel. Spicy dishes like Thai curries or buffalo wings find relief in the beer's fruit sweetness and carbonation.

What sizes does Between Two Pillows come in? Between Two Pillows is available as a four-pack of cans, which is the standard retail format for this release.

Is Between Two Pillows worth the price? Between Two Pillows positions as a mid-range craft IPA, and the collaboration pedigree, six-hop recipe, and strong Untappd community reception at 4.0 out of 5 suggest solid value within the competitive hazy IPA market.

Why Between Two Pillows?

The combination of six hop varieties—including specialty concentrated extracts like Mosaic Incognito and LupoMax formulations—gives this beer a layered aromatic intensity that single- or dual-hop hazies rarely achieve. The heavy oat bill creates a genuinely pillowy texture that lives up to the name, not just in marketing but on the palate. As a collaboration between two Illinois breweries pooling their hop knowledge, it represents a specific snapshot of Chicagoland's thriving craft scene. With a 4.0 rating from over 1,600 Untappd reviewers, it has earned consistent approval from a broad cross-section of hazy IPA drinkers.

Most durable fetch balls I know of.
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
These balls are the biggest balls of them all. Well, not the biggest, but the best. Every other ball she would chew up in short order and I'd be throwing her a floppy piece of rubber. She just wants to fetch, but if it's not bouncing, she can't catch it on the bounce. Got these balls in July and no damage to them. I just ordered another pair, but only because the other two somehow got stuck up in trees. We have some very old and very large oak trees so not so easy to retrieve. Hope they somehow drop someday. But in the meantime, Lassie will be happy with her new ones. Very highly recommended!

Works great for scent work! Bounce is great for air retrieve!
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo, Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My dog doesn’t know he loves them yet but I do! They are a little softer so when we do air retrieve, I don’t have to worry as much about his teeth! I’m hoping he will learn to find them by smell vs sight. We often play in the evenings and he tends to loose his ball. Love chuck it! Right now, we have about 10 chuck it balls! The tennis balls don’t work for air retrieve! Chuckit does!!! Love the thrower too! Saves my arm!!!!

I guess the smell is offputting
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My dog loves chocolate stuff. But for some reason, wasn’t a huge fan of these balls. She played with them a little bit, but they’re not her favorite.

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!
