Onoclea 'Texas Too Tall' is a 2009 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of an amazingly giant selection of sensitive fern, that we grew from a 2004 collection from a boggy site in Cass County, Texas. In the wild, it looked larger than any form we'd seen, but never in our wildest dreams did we expect it to reach 3.5' tall, even in half day sun...normal is 2' tall. The stipes, which hold the fronds, emerge a lovely bright red. Although moist soils are preferred, sensitive fern is amazingly drought-tolerant. Sensitive ferns spread by non-aggressive rhizomes just below the soil surface and will make a 6' wide deer-resistant clump in 5 years. Insulting or otherwise dissing a sensitive fern is considered a hate crime in the blue states, but say what you like in Texas!
