Redemption Elephant Ear (Colocasia esculenta 'Redemption')

Redemption Elephant Ear is a dramatic tropical foliage plant valued for its glossy black leaves, vivid pink centers, and bold warm-season presence. Its dark rippled foliage develops bright pink veining and central coloring that becomes especially striking in heat, giving containers, patios, poolside plantings, and moist garden beds a high-contrast look. This clumping elephant ear brings strong color and texture without relying on flowers for impact. With warmth, rich soil, steady moisture, and part sun to filtered light, Redemption Elephant Ear creates a polished tropical display in indoor and outdoor spaces.

Distinctive Features

Redemption Elephant Ear produces glossy jet-black to deep purple-black leaves with a hot pink center and pink veining that intensifies as the foliage matures. The leaves have a shiny, rippled surface that adds texture and movement to the plant's dark color. It forms a compact to medium clump, making it easier to use in containers and designed beds than some larger elephant ear selections. Flowers may appear occasionally as a spathe and spadix, but this plant is grown primarily for its dramatic foliage, tropical texture, and unusual black-and-pink color pattern.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in part sun to filtered light, with protection from harsh afternoon sun in hot climates to keep the foliage clean and reduce stress.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, humusy, organically rich soil that stays consistently moist while still supporting healthy root growth.
  • Water: Performs best with regular moisture during active growth and should not be allowed to dry out completely in warm weather.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 7 to 11 in protected conditions, while colder climates should treat it as a seasonal container plant or overwinter the tubers indoors.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 3 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in favorable outdoor conditions, with larger size possible in especially warm, well-watered sites.
  • Habit: Forms an upright, clumping tropical plant with large dark leaves rising from the base on sturdy petioles.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a dramatic black-and-pink foliage focal point in large containers, patios, poolside plantings, courtyard beds, tropical-style landscapes, or moist garden areas.
  • Container Planting: Grow in a large decorative pot where its glossy dark foliage and pink centers can provide strong color and be moved or protected before cold weather.
  • Moist Garden: Plant in consistently moist beds, rain gardens, or protected low areas where its love of moisture can support strong growth.
  • Tropical Garden: Pair with chartreuse colocasias, cannas, caladiums, bananas, gingers, coleus, and bright annuals to create a layered warm-season display.
  • Mixed Border: Use in large mixed beds where its dark leaves and pink veining can add depth, contrast, and tropical texture among lower plants.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during active growth to keep the soil consistently moist, especially in containers and hot summer weather.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around outdoor plants to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition.
  • Fertilizing: Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertilizer to support large foliage and vigorous growth.
  • Wind Protection: Site in a sheltered location because strong wind can tear or damage the large ornamental leaves.
  • Overwintering: Lift and store tubers or move containers indoors before frost in climates where the plant is not reliably hardy.
  • Leaf Cleanup: Remove yellowing, torn, or frost-damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking clean and encourage fresh growth.

Why Choose Redemption Elephant Ear?

  • Black And Pink Foliage: Displays glossy dark leaves with vivid pink centers and veins for a rare, high-contrast tropical look.
  • Rippling Texture: Produces shiny rippled foliage that adds movement, depth, and polished detail to containers and garden beds.
  • Compact Clumping Habit: Offers bold elephant ear impact in a more manageable form for containers, patios, and designed plantings.
  • Fast Warm-Season Growth: Responds quickly to heat, water, and fertility with strong foliage production during the growing season.
  • Container Friendly: Works well in patio pots where it can be featured outdoors in summer and protected before frost.

Redemption Elephant Ear is an excellent choice for gardeners who want tropical foliage with unusual color, glossy texture, and strong seasonal impact. Its black leaves, hot pink centers, clumping habit, and love of moisture make it a standout plant for containers, patios, moist garden beds, and dramatic warm-season landscape designs.

After a good scrub, the dogs love them!
Size: 9 inches - Latex Gumby, Size: 9 inches - Latex Gumby
These gumby toys are flexible rubber, and exactly what you'd expect for the price. I ordered three to replace two that had been gifts well loved by my dogs. I read reviews mentioning smell, but wasn't really prepared for it when the package arrived. They all arrived zip tied to a paperboard backing. They all smelled like a fine fragrance designed for robots - like burning motor oil with floral undertones - and the zip ties were stained a sickly green wherever they touched Gumby. Initially, my dogs wanted nothing to do with them, even after a good scrub. I left them to air out in the shed for a few days and then ran them through the dishwasher (without cleanser!) and they were good to go. My dogs love these toys. I know they're not going to last long! I know the arms will get yanked or chewed off first, and then the corner of Gumby's head will go missing. Eventually, his head will be ripped into tiny pieces and strewn about my living room. I know that, sooner or later (and probably sooner!), Gumby will be little more than a torso with weird square legs. And that's okay, because that means my dogs enjoyed the toy. People complaining about a $7 flexible rubber toy not being appropriate for heavy chewers don't understand what dogs need, or what dog toys are for. Part of the satisfaction that chewing brings for dogs is also shredding. Dogs destroy stuff. Some more than others. It's what they do. No toy will last forever if it's used! But I have five dogs, including bully breeds and a Saint Bernard, plus two occasional visitors, and these toys have lasted longer than expected (even if their arms are off in minutes!) The dogs in the pictures are 90 and 120 pounds, modeling both a well loved older Gumby and a brand new one.

Perfect for my terrier, he loves it.
Size: 6 inches - Plush Pokey
Has to be one of my pups favorite toys. He loves having it thrown for him. It is small enough that my toddler can play with the dog. Very durable, it gets played with every day for hours at a time.

It won't last if your dog chews.
Size: 9 inches - Plush Gumby, Size: 9 inches - Plush Gumby
My dog loves these things BUT: The first one lasted 2 days. The stitching along the leg looked a little loose before I gave it to our dog. So I watched her very closely. She went up to see my roommate with it and thank goodness he was watching closely as well because it was then that she ripped the entire thing open and the squeaking ball came out. The problem with the ball is that it is so small- it would be easy for a dog to choke on. I do have to give the seller some credit because they sent another one when I explained that the stiches were loose. I did not have to mail the first one back. The second picture is the second one that they sent. It lasted less than 10 minutes. I DO NOT recommend getting it replaced after you have a "failure"(especially if you don't know how to sew)!!! Why? Because when the second one was in my dog's grasp she had already figured out that the seems were... her target for destruction... She held the legs with her front paws, grabbed the head with her mouth and just started pulling like crazy until- yes. A seem opened again. What started as a small opening in the seem quickly turned into a bigger one. This probably sounds crazy, but we have very smart dog... She was seriously concentrating on the same seem- biting the same area and pulling with her head over and over until the hole became big enough to get stuffing through it. It may be a mistake- we will find out... But I am thinking about sewing the second one back together and reinforce every seem with a "second" seem using some very strong thread. I figure I would rather waste 20 cents or so on the thread to try to fix it, then buy another dog toy from this "brand". When I do this I will also pull ALL of the stuffing out so if it does rip open again, she won't be able to eat any of it. The stuffing looks synthetic and it is low quality- I don't trust it as far as toxicity... All this being said= if there were two layers of fabric with the inside layer being a stronger material, it would make the seems harder to pull apart. The way it is now you have this weak (albeit soft) fabric so when they sew it together the tiny holes left by the needle make the fabric in the seem area easier to tear. This, along with the thread itself being weak and easy to "snap", means that you should only expect it to last more than a day if your dog does not chew anything at all that is not food. 5 starts for the seller though...

Handy size, plush toy with squeaker, great price.
Size: 9 inches - Plush Gumby
Cute Gumby stuffed toy. Bought for my soft-mouthed small dog who enjoys carrying his 'lovey' around in his mouth and jumping onto the bed with it. He is not overly fond of loud squeakers and this squeaker is not loud. I truly find it a bit hard to locate the squeaker but that is a plus for us. This small toy is a bit larger than expected but my dog can manage it. Stuffing is firmer, a good quality toy. I definitely would not give it to an aggressive chewers because half of my past dogs have been small high energy dogs able to destroy a tough toy in a day and no one wants a sick dog or ER visit. But playability is excellent for my gentle and mild mannered 14lb dog.
