Papaver Somniferum are technically perennials and will set seed, but can also be grow as annuals in the UK. They are very are easy to grow from seed and are useful for growing in hot, dry spots where the soil is poor and they do well in coastal, exposed and gravel gardens. Their flowers lack nectar but are rich in pollen and attract a wide range of bees. 


Growing Guide

Easy to grow from seed and is best sown direct where they are to flower, as they are not keen on having their roots disturbed. Sow in autumn for earlier flowers the following year, or sow successionally from mid-April to June for a long flowering period. Once sown, you will probably find that poppies self seed  - seeds can remain viable for many years so can re-appear many years later!
  • Make a drill by pressing a stick into moist soil. Rows need to be about 15cm apart, in a sunny site. 
  • Take pinches of seed and scatter thinly along the drill or you will waste seed and spend more time thinning out.
  • Use a trowel or your fingers to cover seeds very lightly with soil. Label the rows and water using a watering can with a rose attachment.
  • Thin seedlings out once they’re about 4cm tall and again at 8cm, so that they’re spaced about 15cm apart.

I purchased the Tubby Todd Baby Skin Care Bundle because I really value that it uses great all-natural ingredients and is free of harsh chemicals. For the most part, I’ve been very happy with the quality. What I loved: The Ingredients: It feels great using products that are clean and safe for baby skin. Hair + Body Wash: The soap/shampoo combo is gentle and works well. All Over Ointment: This is a staple; it’s excellent for dry skin and general moisturizing. The downside: I had to dock one star specifically for the Diaper Paste. While I wanted to love it, it just didn't help when my baby had an actual diaper rash. It might be fine for prevention, but it wasn't effective for treatment. I eventually switched to A+D Diaper Rash Cream, and it completely cured the rashes in no time. Verdict: I would still recommend this bundle for the shampoo and the All Over Ointment, but I suggest keeping a tube of A+D on hand for when you need heavy-duty rash relief.
