The Cherimoya Tree

The cherimoya tree, scientifically known as Annona cherimola, is a tropical fruit tree native to the Andean highlands of South America. It belongs to the Annonaceae family, which includes other delicious fruits like soursop and custard apple. Cherimoya trees are now cultivated in various regions worldwide with suitable climates. In Europe the the fruit's popularity and demand have led to successful cultivation attempts in select European areas with suitable climates. Southern regions of Spain, particularly the coastal areas of Andalusia has a favorable climate for cherimoya cultivation. Other Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Greece, and Portugal also have some cherimoya cultivation, albeit on a smaller scale. The cherimoya tree is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree that can reach heights of 6 to 9 meters. When cultivated, the trees are pruned back to a desired height of around 2 meters. It has a pyramid-like shape with a rounded crown and a relatively short trunk. The leaves are large, oval-shaped, glossy, and deep green in color, providing a lush appearance to the tree. One of the most distinctive features of the cherimoya tree is its flowers. They are peculiar, fragrant, and unique, with three fleshy outer petals that are greenish-yellow or brownish, and three smaller, more narrow inner petals that are pale yellow or green. The flowers are pollinated by beetles, bees, or flies and develop into the delicious fruit for which the tree is known. Cultivating cherimoya trees can be a rewarding experience, as they offer both ornamental beauty with their lush foliage and striking flowers, as well as delicious fruits with a unique taste. The tree's tropical origins and delightful fruit make it a favorite among fruit enthusiasts and gardeners seeking to add exotic flavors to their home orchards.

Cherimoya fruit - Fino de Jete

This is a grafted Cherimoya tree in a 6 liter pot, including pot circa 120cm high. The rootstock is a Cherimoya seedling, with a Fino de Jete cultivar grafted. The Fino de Jete is a specific cultivar of cherimoya (Annona cherimola) known for its exceptional flavor and quality. It is named after the village of Jete in the province of Granada, Spain, where it originated and is primarily cultivated. The Fino de Jete cultivar is highly regarded among cherimoya enthusiasts for its superior taste and unique characteristics. The Fino de Jete cherimoya has several distinct features that set it apart from other cultivars. The fruit is generally medium to large in size and has a heart-shaped or rounded shape. Its skin is green and covered with small, cone-shaped protuberances or bumps. The surface may also exhibit slight cracks or fissures as the fruit ripens. What truly makes the Fino de Jete cherimoya standout is its exceptional flavor. The flesh of this cultivar is incredibly creamy, smooth, and custard-like. It has a delicate, sweet taste with subtle hints of tropical flavors such as pineapple, banana, and strawberry. Many consider it to be one of the best-tasting cherimoya varieties available.

Properties and care

How to take care of a Cherimoya tree

Climate and Location:

  • Cherimoya trees thrive in warm, frost-free climates like most of our trees. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. If you live in a colder region, consider growing the tree in a greenhouse or a protected area. It has been proven to fruit also in Berlin for example.

Watering:

  • Cherimoya trees require regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. During the fruiting season, ensure adequate watering to prevent fruit drop.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for fruit trees in early spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dosage. Additionally, supplement with organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility.

Pruning:

  • Prune the tree during the dormant season to maintain its shape, remove dead or damaged branches, and improve airflow.

Pollination:

  • Cherimoya trees are primarily pollinated by beetles, bees, or flies. If you have a small tree or limited pollinators in your area, hand pollination may be necessary. Gently transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers using a small brush or cotton swab.

Pest and Disease Control:

  • Monitor the tree for common pests like aphids, mites, and fruit flies. Use organic insecticides or horticultural oils if necessary. Watch for signs of fungal diseases like powdery mildew or root rot, and take appropriate measures such as applying fungicides or improving drainage.

Support:

  • As the tree grows, provide support in the form of stakes or trellises to prevent damage from strong winds or heavy fruit loads.

Harvesting:

  • Cherimoya fruits are typically harvested when they reach maturity and give slightly to gentle pressure. Depending on the cultivar, the skin may turn slightly yellow or develop cracks as a sign of ripeness. Harvest carefully to avoid bruising.

Good contruction but needs a couple revisions
Size: Small, Number of Items: 1
Searching for an interactive toy to feed my beagle his meals from, I first tried the . It split open too easily in rough play and only had the capacity to hold half of a meal. Next I tried for it's larger capacity but it broke at the lid (to Premier's credit they replaced it but I feared it would simply break again). Now on to the Bob-A-Lot. This is a heavy, well made product. I was surprised by the weight. My dog can pick it up but can't carry it for very long. I feel it's not going to break like the others did. That said, the extra weight makes it a noisy toy especially on hard wood floors. The small Bob-A-Lot holds a little over 1 cup of food (large holds 3 cups) but there is a caveat. This is the capacity of the lower chamber. There is actually a separate chamber in the top of the toy that only holds about quarter cup. As a result I have to shake and shake the toy myself to get the food to drop into the lower chamber to load in a complete meal. It's either that or insert food 1 piece of kibble at a time. I wish this toy screwed apart like the IQ Treat Ball or Tug-A-Jug. Despite it's appearance, it does NOT screw apart in the middle. Also slightly annoying is the bottom door doesn't stay fixed into position well. The IQ Treat Ball smartly has several positions for the door to stay locked in. The Bob-A-Lot door is fully adjustable but has often come open more than I want during feeding. As a result the kibble will spill out faster which ruins the challenge. I inquired to Starmark support and they suggested that I use a bit of cardboard or some such to try and jam the door into a specific position. This right here tells me that some additional design could be used. I'd say that the Bob-A-Lot was designed with dogs in mind but not humans. It's a chore to load in the food. And then the door opens too much giving the dog an easy meal. I might even guess that it takes less time for my dog to empty it than it takes for me to fill it. Overall it's the best option I've found but I'm still searching for the perfect combination of all 3 of the toys.

Aggressive chewer approved
Size: Large, Number of Items: 1, Size: Large, Number of Items: 1
Got this to help amuse my 90lb GSD while I was out of town for a month. He gets one meal a day in it, and really enjoys the work. It’s easy, not a puzzle, no frustration, just a “job.” He chewed on the yellow top pretty aggressively while I was gone, and it still works fine. This is a dog that destroys even the most durable chew toys in minutes to hours when he’s anxious, and I imagine he experienced some anxiety while I was gone especially during periods when he was alone. So, I’m quite pleased with the durability. This will definitely stay in the meal service rotation and I will replace it if necessary. One thing to note: the fill hole is pretty small. His kibble is small enough that one might think it would easily pour right in, but no. At some point I’ll get annoyed enough to pull out my drill and make that hole larger.

My dog loves it
Color: 1 PC-Beef-Red, Color: 1 PC-Beef-Red
The bone arrived today and my dog loves it. He is a very aggressive chewer and destroyed almost all his toys so far, even toys that were advertised for aggressive chewers unfortunately didn't held out long, the longest so far was a stuffy we couldn't find anymore and that one lasted him a few weeks but everything else lasted him an hour up to a few days max, even bones don't last him long so we have our hopes set on this bone to satisfy his chewing needs. I will update my review later on sturdiness, since we just got it and I can't review that yet but so far he loves it he has been chewing on it non stop, he already managed to get very small pieces of as shown in picture but with a regular bone he would've already been much much further. The bone is only 10 bucks so the value for money you get based on my experience so far is amazing! But also for this I will come back later to touch upon more. The size is good, our boy is a medium sized dog and this bone was advertised for medium to large size dogs and I thinks the size is just right for our boy . And there is definitely a beef flavor on it you can smell it but it doesn't smell bad it's a nice smell and not very strong but when he is chewing on it you smell it. I would based on my experience so far definitely recommend this bone but also on this I will touch back upon later if it's worth it in the long run. So far a very happy dog and owners here. Edit on May 8th (original review was on March 11th) He still hasn't managed to destroy it it's the first (cgew)toy he hasn't managed to destroy yet which is very impressive since he managed to destroy the even most toughest things we got for him in a week tops and bones within 1, 2 days tops, so we are very happy and pleased with this bone and will definitely get more later. He still enjoys chewing on it and leaves our things mostly alone for some reason he just likes stealing my things and chew on it lol. So 2 months later still stand by recommending this when your dog loves to chew and destroys everything he puts his mouth on.

Extremely durable, dogs love them
Color: 2 PC-Beef-Red, Color: 2 PC-Beef-Red
I was looking for the toughest and most durable dog chew bone I could find and this is it. I have bought multiple other brands that claim to be very durable and tough for a very long time and this is the one for sure. The shower has described this phone accurately and it truly does last. I purchased this bone about 2 months ago. As you see from the photos attached, this is a very well made chew bone and my aggressive pitbulls can't tear it apart do they try. They never get tired of it and chewing it every single day for hours on and keeping them very occupied. I have two bones and three pitbulls that chew on it every day. It is so adorable and has an awesome flavor to it which I think entices them even more to want to chew on it. The durability and Lasting power is amazing to me with these tough chewers. I highly recommend this product to everyone out there. I will say only one negative and that is that the middle wraparound piece they were able to pull off but that is not a big deal because there is plenty of bone which was under that cover in the middle of the bone. There's a few mauled chips missing from the ends but the life of this bone is obviously going to be a long time which really surprised me. Give it a shot if you have heavy duty chewers and you will find how awesome this phone really is and it's durability and strength our second to none in my opinion.
