Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori'

Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' is a fine-stemmed wire vine with tiny rounded leaves and naturally interlaced growth. It can trail over the edge of a pot, thread through a small frame, or be trimmed into a denser mound. Many slender, woody stems weave through each other and quickly fill the space around the pot.

The small green leaves give Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' a light, netted look, while the plant grows vigorously when it has enough light, moisture and root space. Indoors it can be grown trailing, clipped, or trained over a simple shape. Regular trimming keeps the stems fresh, encourages branching and helps light reach the inner growth.

Fine wire stems and tiny green leaves

  • Growth habit: Scrambling, trailing or climbing woody vine that can be shaped with pruning or guided over a small frame.
  • Foliage: Small rounded to slightly variable green leaves sit along very thin, flexible stems.
  • Stem behaviour: Branches freely and can form a dense, interlaced mass when growth is left untrimmed.
  • Container behaviour: Keep it in a pot with steady moisture, good drainage and airflow around the stem network.
  • Seasonal response: Can shed leaves or pause growth when kept too dry, too dark or too cold.

Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' scrambling stems and roots

Muehlenbeckia complexa belongs to Polygonaceae and is native from Lord Howe Island to New Zealand, where it grows as a scrambling shrub in temperate conditions. In habitat it can move across ground, rocks, shrubs and coastal edges, using flexible stems to spread and weave through surrounding vegetation. Bright light, regular moisture and pruning keep the active stem extension dense in a pot.

The species can produce small greenish-white flowers, and mature female plants may develop small fruits after flowering. In indoor cultivation, Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' is kept as a fine branching plant that recovers quickly after trimming and can be grown trailing, clipped or trained.

Keeping the stem network dense

  • Light: Give bright indirect light or gentle morning/evening sun. Low light leads to long, open stems with fewer leaves.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has started to dry. Keep the root ball lightly and evenly moist, as thin stems and small leaves react quickly to drought.
  • Substrate: Use an airy, moisture-buffering mix with drainage. A standard houseplant mix improved with mineral material or fine bark keeps the roots moist while allowing oxygen through the pot.
  • Semi-hydro and mineral substrates: Moisture-buffering inert or mineral blends can suit this vine if the roots stay evenly moist and oxygenated. Dry, coarse mineral setups are less suitable for its fine root system.
  • Humidity: Average to moderately humid indoor air is suitable, but very dry air can speed up leaf drop when combined with missed watering.
  • Temperature: Keep it cool to mild-warm indoors, ideally around 10–24°C. Protect potted plants from hot dry air and prolonged freezing conditions.
  • Pruning: Trim long stems regularly to maintain density. Cut just above a leafy section so the plant can branch from live growth.
  • Repotting: Repot when the roots fill the pot or watering becomes difficult. Choose only a modestly larger pot, because an oversized wet root zone can cause decline.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Strong feeding can push soft growth that dries out faster indoors.
  • Propagation: Root stem cuttings or divide rooted sections during active growth. Keep cuttings lightly moist and bright while new roots form.
  • Placement: Place where the fine stems can trail, climb or be trimmed without being crushed against surrounding objects.
  • Growth rate: Fast and vigorous in bright, evenly moist conditions, with slower growth in low light, cold conditions or repeated drought.

Diagnosing leaf drop and bare stems

  • Leaf drop: Usually points to drought, a sudden temperature shift or very low light. Check the root ball first, then move the plant to steadier conditions.
  • Bare inner stems: Often caused by ageing growth and poor light inside a dense tangle. Thin and shorten the stems so light reaches the centre.
  • Crisp tips or shrinking leaves: Usually linked to dry roots or hot air. Water more evenly and move the plant away from heat sources.
  • Soft, collapsing stems: Check for cold wet substrate or root rot. Improve drainage, reduce watering frequency and remove dead sections.
  • Pests in fine stems: Fine stems can conceal spider mites, aphids or scale. Inspect the stem network closely and treat early before pests spread through the tangle.

Training, trimming and container shape

Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' can be grown loose and trailing, and it also takes well to shaping. Use a small wire frame, hoop or trellis for a denser upright outline. For a softer hanging shape, let the newest stems spill and shorten older stems before they become bare. Regular light maintenance keeps the stem network leafy and even.

Safety around chewing pets

Muehlenbeckia complexa 'Maori' is grown as an ornamental plant. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children that chew plants, and remove pruned stems from the pot surface.

Muehlenbeckia complexa name, family and meaning

Muehlenbeckia complexa belongs to Polygonaceae. The basionym Polygonum complexum A.Cunn. was published by Allan Cunningham in Annals of Natural History 1(6): 455 in 1838, and the accepted combination Muehlenbeckia complexa (A.Cunn.) Meisn. was published by Carl Daniel Friedrich Meisner in Plantarum vascularium genera 2: 227 in 1841. The genus Muehlenbeckia honours the Alsatian physician and botanist Henri Gustav Muehlenbeck, while the species epithet complexa refers to the plant’s interlaced, tangled branching.

Luxuriously Soft & Cooling, But Needs a Wider Opening
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I really enjoy sleeping on the Beckham Hotel Collection Silk Pillowcase—it has such a silky, smooth feel that makes a noticeable difference in comfort. It feels wonderful against the skin and hair, and I especially love how it helps keep my head cool throughout the night, which leads to a restful sleep. The color choices are also wonderful and look very rich, adding a nice elegant touch to the bed. It’s also held up nicely in the wash, which is always a plus for something this delicate. That said, I’m giving it 4 stars because of the zipper opening design. You lose about 4 inches of usable space at the opening, which makes it harder than expected to insert a pillow. Unlike other zippered pillowcases I own, the ends don’t open wide enough, so I had to squeeze my pillow in—and I actually noticed the stitching starting to pull a bit because of it. A wider opening would make a big difference. Overall, it’s great to sleep on and feels luxurious, but for the price, I do think the design could be improved.

Luxuriously Soft and Packaged Like a High-End Brand
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I have never owned a 100% silk pillowcase before, especially not at this price point, so I am really glad I was able to experience this one. Even the packaging felt impressive. It was packaged like a luxury brand, which made the whole experience feel special before I even used it. I already had satin pillowcases and thought they were soft, but they do not compare to this mulberry silk pillowcase at all. This pillowcase feels incredibly soft, smooth, and luxurious. I had the satin pillowcases on some of my pillows and this silk one on another, and even in the dark when I turn over during the night, I can immediately tell which pillow has this silk pillowcase on it. The difference is that noticeable. It also has ample room, so you can use a full, fluffy pillow and it will still fit nicely inside the pillowcase. I love the added luxury of the zipper because it keeps the pillow from slipping out, but the zipper is hidden and does not affect the comfort at all. Honestly, this pillowcase put my old flattened pillow to shame. Now I feel like I need to get a new pillow immediately so the pillow can match the quality of the pillowcase. It feels so gentle and smooth against my face, and I love how cool it gets when the air conditioning hits it for a while. For nighttime hot flashes, that cool feeling is such a relief. I also really appreciate that I don't always have to sleep with a satin cap if I don't want to. I have locs, so protecting my hair from lint and dryness is important, but some nights you just want to be completely comfortable without wearing anything on your head. This pillowcase gives me that option while still being gentle on my hair. It also feels better for my skin compared to cotton and other materials because it doesn't seem to soak up all the natural oils from my face. I notice a difference. The only thing I would mention is that while it gives a nice cool feeling at first, it does absorb body heat fairly quickly and can warm up. Even with that, the softness and comfort more than make up for it. I didn't know what I was missing by not having real silk sheets, and now I really crave a full silk sheet and pillowcase set. If they feel anything like this pillowcase, I know that would be some of the best sleep ever. Overall, this pillowcase is soft, luxurious, comfortable, beautifully packaged, roomy, secure with the hidden zipper, and absolutely worth trying.

How do I know if this is ....
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen
Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)
Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen, Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen
This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those. Same material on paper, totally different experience in real life. From what I can tell, it’s thicker and more tightly woven, which gives it that extra silky, almost glassy feel. It’s buttery smooth, lightweight, and has that cool-to-the-touch finish that’s honestly a dream in the Phoenix, AZ heat, where it’s already 105 in March. Getting into bed feels like flipping your pillow to the cold side… every time. 🧊 It fits a standard queen pillow perfectly (mine’s a thicker foam pillow and slid right in with zero struggle), and the hidden zipper is secure without being annoying. No bunching, no slipping off mid-sleep—just stays put. And it’s not just nice—it’s doing something. My hair definitely wakes up less chaotic, and it feels gentler on my skin overall. One of those quiet upgrades you don’t think about much… until you do. The ivory color is soft and clean-looking, very effortless luxury, and I like that there are other color options if you want to switch up the vibe. Yes, $60 for a pillowcase sounds a little wild—but this actually feels like a $60 pillowcase. Thick, high-quality, and genuinely luxurious, not pretending to be. If you’ve been on the fence, this is one of those small changes that makes your whole sleep setup feel elevated.
