Chenopodium quinoa

This plant is a double-whammy! Grow Quinoa as an ornamental for its stunning blooms and then harvest the seeds for a shelf-stable superfood!

Quinoa is grown as a staple food crop by many cultures of South America, mainly within the Andes Mountains which span the entire continent. The domestication of the plant dates back an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 years ago! To learn more about the history of this amazing plant, visit the Food and Agriculture Organization's website celebrating Quinoa and its relationship with people.

Our Quinoa mix began in 2017 from several open-pollinated varieties: Brightest Brilliant Rainbow (OSSI variety bred by Frank Morton), Cherry Vanilla (OSSI variety bred by Frank Morton), Faro, and Red Head (OSSI variety bred by Frank Morton). In 2019, our grower added in more Brightest Brilliant Rainbow from Grand Prismatic Seed in Salt Lake City, Utah as well as Quinoa received from Tesuque Pueblo Farm in New Mexico.

In 2017, all four original varieties in the mix were grown with low water input. The most drought-tolerant plants survived and their seeds have been saved into this mix. These lambsquarters relatives also make a showy ornamental plant, producing gorgeous, voluptuous flower heads in shades of pink, orange, and red, predominantly a lovely pink-burgundy, followed by rich, nutrient-dense seeds. Plants reach 3-5' tall.

200 seeds.

Directions: Direct seed after last frost. We recommend that you plant in a row if the weed "lamb's quarters" is also in your garden because they look very similar as young plants. Harvest seedheads when seeds have changed from green to a tan color. Allow seed heads to dry further by placing them head first into a paper bag. Once plant is fully dry, thresh and winnow chaff from the seeds.

Acquired taste
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Tastes worse than Chlorella. I don't feel any tangible benefits from taking it but also didn't notice anything from Chlorella either. This has a more algae pond water type taste than Chlorella which has a slight umami flavor that I find more tolerable. I like mixing it into a Green Giant drink but it's really just Cocoa, Spirulina or Chlorella, and whey or plant protein. I like the green notes that counterbalance the sweetness. But I prefer Chlorella's taste to this.

High Quality Spirulina at a Great Value
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I’ve been taking spirulina for a few years now, and Micro Ingredients Organic Spirulina Powder has quickly become one of my favorites. The quality is excellent, rich color, fine texture, and no unpleasant odor, which is a good sign of freshness. I really appreciate that it’s organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, and contains no additives. It mixes well into smoothies and juices, and I love that it’s packed with plant-based protein, chlorophyll, and essential vitamins and minerals. For the price and the purity, this is an amazing value. I’ll definitely keep buying it!

Very Fine, High Quality Spirulina
Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 16 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Wow, they really vacuum seal these bags! When I received this bag, it was practically brick hard, as if the contents has frozen in there. I was a little nervous about what that might mean for the powder, but after I cut across the top and let some air out, it all changed. The powder was super vivid forest green; and it was soft and fluffy with constant little clouds of powder coming out of the bag. If I just sit here with the bag open, tiny green particles keep flying out on its own. This powder is extremely fine! That's a good thing since the finer the powdern the higher the quality, in most cases. The brilliant green color is wonderful, and it instantly provides energy and great health benefits. I believe everyone should be taking Spirulina and other natural supplements since the average American diet is way under proper nourishment. This Spirulina tastes pretty terrible to me, so I blended it with some other healthy powders- moringa, beet, and triphala- to make an awesome superfood health supplement! This way it's easy to take, I can share the wealth, and take in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that my body needs for energy and proper nourishment. Encapsulating is definitely a good idea for those who simply don't make smoothies for all of their supplements every day, and for those who easily forget or need to take various health supplements. This is a great combo.
