Alocasia cucullata

Alocasia cucullata is an upright Alocasia with glossy green leaves and a clumping base. Mature plants can develop several shoots from the base.

Alocasia cucullata can reach around 65 cm tall. Indoors, size depends on light, warmth, pot size and age. The leaves are smooth, rounded and slightly cupped, with a soft hooded look.

Leaf shape and growth

The leaves are broad and heart-shaped with a gentle curve. Stems grow upright from the base, and older plants can form several shoots.

New leaves emerge upright, then settle into position as they mature. The glossy surface shows dust, water marks and pest damage quickly, so regular leaf checks are useful.

  • Glossy, rounded leaves with a soft curve
  • Upright, clumping growth
  • Upright habit that broadens with age
  • Can reach around 100 cm tall
  • Glossy green leaves on upright petioles

Origin and growing conditions

This species comes from a wide range across Asia, from Sri Lanka and the Himalaya to southern China and Indo-China. It grows in warm, humid conditions and is widely cultivated.

Indoors, it prefers steady warmth, filtered light and even moisture. The roots need air as well as water, so the mix should drain well from top to bottom.

Water and light

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or soft morning sun
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let excess drain
  • Substrate: Loose mix that stays lightly moist and drains freely
  • Temperature: Keep above 18 °C; grows best in warm conditions
  • Humidity: Around 50–70% is usually enough for steady leaf opening
  • Feeding: Light, regular feeding during active growth
  • Pot choice: Use a stable pot with drainage
  • Mineral substrates: Can adapt to mineral or semi-hydro substrates if the change is gradual

Pot size and moisture

Keeping the pot close to the root size helps prevent excess moisture. Large pots can stay wet at the bottom, which can stress the roots.

Repot when the roots fill the container or the mix loses its loose structure. Increase pot size gradually and keep the plant warm and stable after repotting.

Common issues

  • One yellow leaf can be normal as the plant grows
  • Several yellow leaves together suggest root or watering issues
  • Soft stems often point to cold, wet soil
  • Dry edges can come from uneven watering, dry air or buildup in the mix
  • Smaller leaves may follow stress, low light or tired substrate
  • Leaning growth usually comes from light reaching the plant from one side
  • Watch for pests like spider mites, thrips and mealybugs

Propagation and care

Remove fully yellow leaves at the base. Keep healthy leaves in place, as they feed the plant while new shoots develop.

Divide rooted shoots only when each piece has enough roots to keep growing after separation. Mature plants may produce a green spathe and spadix. Remove faded inflorescences with clean scissors once they start to dry.

Safety

This plant contains irritating oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and children, and use gloves when pruning, repotting or dividing the plant.

Botanical background

Alocasia cucullata was given its current name by George Don in 1839, based on the earlier name Arum cucullatum published by João de Loureiro. The species is native from Sri Lanka and the Himalayan region to southern China and Indo-China. The name cucullata means “hooded”, referring to the hood-like form seen in the plant’s flowers.

Purchased several shirts, all were great quality. You never know what you’ll get when you purchase sight unseen, these are worth it. Great value, style, and comfort. Color is exactly what you see online. True to size.

For work or casual wear, this polo is a great choice.
Material Type: Recycled Polyester, Color: Port Stripe, Size: X-Large
I really like this polo. I've been wearing it once a week or every other week since November. Its very comfortable and breathable. This polo feels like it should last a while. The fit is good. I typcally wear XL and this XL fits great. I've pruchased it in both burgundy and black so far. I definitely recommend this shirt. For work or casual wear, this will look good.

Great value: These are my go-to work from home shirt
Material Type: Recycled Polyester, Color: Blue, Size: X-Large
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by these shirts and wear them weekly for Zoom calls, since I’m still working from home these days. I figured at the price point it was worth trying them out, and now I’ve bought several in different colors. They aren’t super soft, but they are comfy and look nice. I’m 6’1” ~220 pounds, and the XL slim fit still has plenty of room. I imagine the regular cut is incredibly boxy and oversized. The difference between polyester vs recycled polyester is inconsequential. I typically buy expensive golf shirts, and these definitely aren’t as nice. They are a fraction of the cost though and a great “beater” work shirt / hang out shirt. It’s nice wearing something that looks and feels decent, but if something happens to it, you can toss and it and pick up another for the cost of a chipotle burrito.

Great price, not great quality
Material Type: Recycled Polyester, Color: Black, Size: Small
Simple, straight forward all black polo. I am a size medium woman (with some room since I don't like form-fitting) and bought a men's small. Fits perfectly for my frame. Long enough to tuck in for my part-time extra weekend job uniform. Also suitable for the golf course. A little thin, and if you hold it up to light you can sort of see through it. *Not* flowy, soft and smooth fabric like a rash guard/sun shirt - more structured than that. But it's cool and does the job for the price under $10.
