The Hopi Yellow Pole Lima Bean is an heirloom variety traditionally cultivated by the Hopi people of the American Southwest. It is well-adapted to arid climates and represents generations of seed saving and selection by Indigenous farmers. This variety has a creamy, mild, and slightly nutty flavor.  Produces large, buttery-yellow seeds that may show slight mottling. They retain their rich color when dried. The pods are long, flat green pods containing multiple seeds.

Culinary Uses:  Ideal as a dry bean for soups, stews, and slow-cooked dishes. Can be harvested early for fresh shelling beans. Traditionally cooked with corn, squash, or as a hearty protein in Indigenous dishes.

Growing Tips: The Hopi Yellow Pole Lima Bean produces a vigorous climbing vine, reaching 6–10 feet with proper support. The foliage is lush and typical of pole-type lima beans.  Prefers a long, hot growing season and will mature in 90–110 days. Plant in loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Avoid excessive nitrogen. Direct sow after danger of frost and when soil temperatures reach at least 65°F (18°C). Space seeds 4–6 inches apart with strong trellising or pole support. Water moderately and evenly. The variety has moderate drought resistance once established. Can be intercropped with corn or sunflowers for natural vertical support. Rotate annually to prevent pest and disease issues.

Harvest Advice: For Fresh Shelling Beans: Harvest when pods are fully formed and beans are plump, before they dry. For Dry Beans: Allow pods to fully mature and dry on the plant.
