The Pinecone Cactus, opens in a new tab cuttings, known as Tephrocactus articulatus cuttings, are an excellent way to grow this uniquely segmented cactus from scratch. It is named for its scaly, pinecone-like joints, and prized for its quirky, modular form and ease of propagation. Each cutting consists of one or more articulated segments that resemble woody pinecones, giving it a distinct and sculptural appearance unlike any other cactus. These cuttings are perfect for collectors or succulent lovers seeking something both unusual and low-maintenance.

Native to the arid regions of northwestern Argentina, the Pinecone Cactus grows in dry, rocky soil and is well-adapted to extreme drought. As it matures, it produces stacked, detachable joints that can be separated and rooted to form new plants. While slow growing, these cuttings will eventually develop into charming, irregular clusters that make striking additions to container gardens, rock displays, or cactus collections. Tephrocactus articulatus rarely exceed 18 inches tall, making it ideal for small spaces.

The flowers of the Pinecone cactus bloom in spring or early summer with creamy white to pale yellow flowers. Though blooming is uncommon in young cuttings, established plants can flower and may produce small fruits containing seeds. This cactus is generally non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for indoor or outdoor growing with proper handling, though its joints are delicate and may break off easily, so handle with care during transplanting or propagation.

How to Care for Your Pinecone Cactus Cuttings

  1. Light: Provide full sun exposure for at least 6 hours daily. Indoors, place near a bright, south- or west-facing window or supplement with a grow light.
  2. Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix with added sand, pumice, or perlite to mimic its native rocky habitat. Avoid heavy or moisture-retentive soil.
  3. Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter dormancy, reduce watering to once every 3–4 weeks or less.
  4. Indoor Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F. Protect from frost and cold drafts. It is not frost-hardy.
  5. Outdoor USDA Zones: Best suited for USDA zones 9–11. In cooler regions, grow in pots and move indoors during freezing temperatures.
  6. Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertilizer once in spring. Do not over-fertilize, as these plants are slow-growing and do not require much feeding.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Pinecone cactus (Tephrocactus articulatus) with its detachable joints, pinecone-like texture, and slow-growing nature, it’s an eye-catching addition to any cactus garden or succulent shelf. These cuttings offer an easy way to grow your own specimen and enjoy the unique beauty of one of nature’s most unusual cacti. If you're searching for a cactus with quirky charm and effortless character, the Pinecone cactus cutting is a perfect pick.

Buy it — it’ll be your dogs best friend!
Color: Orange
Best treat toy ever! In the beginning of 2025 I bought this for my 12yr old Alaskan Malamute who loves puzzles and brain games. She loved it and played with it every day. Sadly, she passed middle of this year. Now in December, I have purchased this toy again for my newly adopted 10 month Great Dane puppy. Again, it’s an absolute hit! My Dane eats very fast, so I actually use this as a way to break up her meals. I put about half her meal (freeze dried raw kibble) in her slow feeder bowl and fill this toy about two times to feed her the other half. Also, we are crate training and before I leave the house I put treats in this toy and leave it in the crate with her. She has bad separation anxiety, but this toy actually seems to help calm her down because she enjoys it so much. I have bought many treat toys — this one is supreme. It’s not too loud or too difficult for the dogs to play with. So far it has held up without being chewed apart. It’s good quality, great size (orange for large breeds) and honestly, worth every penny.

Well made dog toy
Color: Blue
The snoops are great for our active labrador. He is a very aggressive chewer, and so far, has not destroyed a snoop yet. He has mulitples. They are a great size for filling with treats or kibble and they keep him engaged in the activity. He even likes to carry them when he does his zoomies sometimes. They are lightweight and sturdy, and the material is nice and flexible. Great toy / puzzle ball to have around for your pup!

Great for mental stimulation. Durable for my chewers!
Color: Purple Lil Snoop, Color: Purple Lil Snoop
Love these! Quality material, safe for dogs — I make my dogs home made freezer treats and fill these up with it, and serve. Keeps them busy for hours. It’s also fun for them to roll it around to get regular treats out of. Toy + treats = a very happy pup. This size I got for my puppy. The larger ones I use for my adult dogs. Super cute too, and silent! I have Mini Aussies, so it’s great mental stimulation for them. Tires them out.

Very durable
Color: Blue
I have never written a review but just have to say how much our Pitbull LOVES this toy. It is very sturdy very good since he is such an aggressive chewer. This is only the second product I have found that he can’t destroy in 5 minutes. It keeps him busy for a long time and plays with it long after the treats are gone which is good as too many treats and he would gain weight. Highly recommend it. He weighes 70 lbs and the largest one is the perfect size. Kibble doesn’t work as it empties out immediately. I use Beggin Strips cut to size just to fit in the hole—they will come out but not all at once and survive his chewing on the toy.

Overall good toy for dogs
Color: Blue
My dog loves her snoop. I put little training treats in there for her, and she loves to roll it around and get the treats out. For her, it doesn’t last very long because they do fall out pretty easy, but she is a big dog so a smaller dog might have a harder time than her. Very sturdy and easy to travel with. Not noisy at all. I would say it’s a good, quick play toy for a dog like mine.
