Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ is an eye-catching tropical houseplant that commands attention with its vivid crimson and emerald foliage. A member of the Araceae family and part of the Chinese Evergreen group, this cultivar originates from the lush rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it thrives in warm, shaded environments beneath the jungle canopy.

The broad, lance-shaped leaves of ‘Red Star’ are a stunning fusion of ruby red, deep pink, and green margins — creating a glowing, starburst effect that intensifies under the right light conditions. Each leaf has a glossy, almost lacquered finish, giving the plant a luxurious and polished appearance. Compact, elegant, and effortlessly vibrant, Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ brings warmth and sophistication to any indoor setting — a living jewel of the tropics.

Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ – Care Guide

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to enhance its vivid red and pink hues. Too much direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch, while too little light may result in dull colouring. It will adapt to lower light conditions but grows best with filtered daylight, such as near an east-facing window.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during spring and summer but allow the top 2–3 cm to dry out before watering again. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. Avoid letting the plant sit in water, as Aglaonemas are prone to root rot. Use filtered or room-temperature water to avoid mineral build-up.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Thrives between 18–28 °C. Avoid cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, or placing near air conditioning units or radiators.
Humidity: Moderate humidity (50–70%) suits it well. Mist occasionally or group with other tropical plants to maintain moisture levels. In dry environments, consider using a humidifier.

Soil and Potting

Use a loose, well-draining mix rich in organic matter — a blend of compost, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 2–3 years in spring or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture build-up.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause salt build-up and tip burn on the delicate leaves.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim away older or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking fresh. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and restore their vibrant shine. Rotate occasionally for even exposure to light and symmetrical growth.

Growth and Maturity

Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ is a slow to moderate grower, typically reaching 40–60 cm in height and spread. Mature plants form a compact, bushy shape with lush, upright leaves. Occasionally, small white spathes may appear, but this plant is primarily valued for its decorative foliage rather than its blooms.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Faded colour: Insufficient light.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or hard water use.

  • Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ is part of a long line of ornamental Chinese Evergreen hybrids bred for their colourful foliage and easy-going nature. Revered in many Asian cultures as a symbol of prosperity and positive energy, this cultivar adds both good fortune and bold colour to the home.

Known for its ability to purify indoor air by removing toxins like formaldehyde and benzene, it’s both decorative and functional. While safe to touch, the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested — so it’s best kept out of reach of pets.

Styling Tip

Aglaonema ‘Red Star’ adds instant warmth and vibrancy to any space. Display it in a simple white, charcoal, or gold-toned pot to complement its jewel-like colouring. It pairs beautifully with green-leaved companions such as Philodendron ‘Imperial Green’ or Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’. Perfect for living rooms, offices, or shaded hallways, it injects colour and life into even the dullest corners — a true statement of tropical luxury.

    A Beta Worth Rooting For
    Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

    Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
    Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

    A familiar story, just with…..less.
    Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Fun with a late blooming omega
    Format: Kindle
I like this book. The story is fun, cute, and sexy. There's just a little drama, some excellent, steamy scenes, and a fairly good relationship building storyline. I especially like how all the main characters are a bit older than the usual 20 somethings I tend to see in this kind of book. Having said that, I wish there were more descriptions of the places, as well as the food in the fancy restaurant. I enjoyed the cocktails at the club, so I missed that kind of detail when Gray took Madison on a dinner date. I also wish there had been more interaction between Lucas and Madison, and Lucas and Rian. It felt a bit lopsided, with a focus on Rian, Madison, and Gray. I wish it had been proofread - there are a lot of typos, but nothing too distracting.
