Midknight Blue Agapanthus (Agapanthus hybrid 'Monmid')

Midknight Blue Agapanthus brings deep, saturated blue flower clusters that read bold and clean in summer borders and containers. Its strap-like foliage forms a lush, fountainlike clump that adds structure even before the first buds open. When it blooms, tall stems lift the flowers above the leaves for a crisp, architectural look that pairs easily with almost any color palette. If you want a strong summer performer with a refined silhouette, this agapanthus delivers dependable impact.

Distinctive Features

This selection produces tight, rounded umbels of deep violet-blue flowers on sturdy stems above bright green, strap-shaped foliage. Bloom typically peaks in summer, and the flower heads hold well, giving you a long window of color and strong cut-flower potential. The habit is clumping and upright, staying tidy rather than running, which makes it easy to repeat in designed plantings. In milder climates it can be semi-evergreen, keeping attractive foliage longer into the cool season.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with best flowering in full sun.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil, and avoid sites that stay soggy, especially in winter.
  • Water: Medium, water regularly to establish, then water when the top few inches of soil begin to dry.
  • USDA Zones: 6 to 10.
  • Mature Size: About 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, with flower stems reaching about 3 to 4 feet.
  • Notable Traits: Clump forming habit, strong summer bloom, and attractive to pollinators.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant a small group so the deep blue flower heads create a midsummer focal point above a lush green clump.
  • Containers: Use in large pots where the tall bloom stems add height and the foliage stays clean and full.
  • Sunny Borders: Place in mid-border positions for upright structure and a clear band of summer color.
  • Mass Planting: Repeat in drifts for a dramatic, unified look that reads as intentional from a distance.
  • Cut Flower Garden: Harvest stems for bold summer arrangements with strong color and form.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly the first growing season, then reduce frequency once established.
  • Feeding: Feed in early spring and again after flowering to support strong clumps and repeat performance.
  • Division: Divide only when overcrowded, because it often blooms best when left undisturbed.
  • Winter Protection: In colder areas, mulch the crown and consider overwintering container plants in a protected spot.
  • Cleanup: Remove spent flower stems and tidy older foliage to keep the clump looking sharp.

Why Choose Midknight Blue Agapanthus?

  • Deep Blue Color: Saturated violet-blue flower clusters add a bold, premium look in summer.
  • Architectural Form: Upright bloom stems and strap-like foliage create clean structure in designed beds.
  • Container Strength: Performs beautifully in large pots where the flowers rise above a lush base.
  • Pollinator Value: Summer blooms support bees and other beneficial visitors.
  • Easy Repeatability: Clumping growth makes it simple to mass for a cohesive, high-impact effect.

If you want summer color with strong structure and a clean, modern feel, Midknight Blue Agapanthus is a smart choice. Give it sun, sharp drainage, and steady moisture while it establishes, and it will reward you with tall stems of deep blue bloom year after year. Plant it in repeating groups to make the color and form feel intentional across the landscape.

Everyday Spiritual Inspiration
Format: Kindle
Not only is this book providing me with sacred wisdom for my daily meditation practice, I find I turn to it like a trusted friend to help me find wisdom when I am at a loss by looking in the section "Using Inspirational Passages to Change Negative Thinking.". The careful way that the source authors and scriptures are referenced is a great asset. This is a book that I will probably wear out and have to buy again before all is said and done.

a book that needed to be written!
Format: Kindle
Force of Nature is a wonderful book that needed to be written. A true -life adventure story that conveys the physical and emotional journey of a woman in her 50s who goes on a hike few dare try. The writing is incredibly sensory—full of everything she sees, feels, tastes and smells out in the wild. It’s a story of frustration and achievement, of triumphing over internal anxiousness and very real dangers and climbs. Beautiful writing, full of hope, great for book clubs and as a gift for nature-lovers. Hit the trail with Force of Nature!

An epic adventure, page after page!
Format: Paperback
Many women dream of making this hike (I once did) but few lace up their boots and get on the trail. And even a tiny fraction of those who DO realize their goal, could capture the experience like Joan Griffin. I read several chapters a night and always looked forward to getting back on the trail with her from my rocking chair. The grandeur of the sights, the wonder of seeing the world well above 8,000 feet ~ for 27 days ~ reads like a personal diary. Every perspective, high and low, is captured: the practical issues of carrying on even with a twisted ankle on Day 1, then blisters, surviving sudden weather changes, confronting inner doubts, securing essential food and water, and losing the camera enrich the book in an authentic style. In between all this, the reader remembers that it all took place with 40 pound backpacks on their backs! It's a magical but real-life journey with the inevitable personality differences of the Three Women, as well as their uniquely personal reasons to hike. As the brave heroes arrive to the finish line, one is aware of the power of grace that accompanied them all along. Yes, this experience changed the hikers but it also changes the reader. Being aware of those who live curiously and courageously provides a kind of encouragement for us to do the same, even after age 50.
