A rare and texturally captivating species formally described by Croat & D.C. Bay in 2006, Philodendron heterocraspedon is a canopy-climbing aroid native to the wet lowland and lower montane rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador, typically found between 50 and 800 meters elevation. Its name derives from the Greek hetero ("different") and craspedon ("border") — a nod to its distinctively undulating leaf margins that set it apart from superficially similar species. The leaves are long, narrow, and elegantly elongated, tapering to a pointed tip with a smooth matte-gloss finish, deeply impressed primary venation that creates a gently pleated or ribbed texture across the blade, and wavy margins that give the foliage an almost sculptural, architectural quality. Juvenile leaves are narrower with simpler form, gradually developing greater width, stronger venation, and more pronounced margin undulation as the plant matures on a support. Still extremely scarce in cultivation and rarely seen outside specialist collections, it is a plant that rewards patient growers with increasingly impressive foliage over time.

  • Light: Bright indirect light ideal — supports compact internodes, strong venation, and the best leaf texture. Avoid harsh midday sun. Tolerates moderate light but growth slows considerably.
  • Water: Water when top 1-2" of medium is dry, then saturate thoroughly and allow to drain. Keep consistently moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Excellent drainage essential.
  • Humidity: 60-80% preferred. Stable high humidity supports larger leaves and more pronounced leaf texture. A humidifier is strongly recommended.
  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Provide a firm moss pole or trellis — vertical support encourages increasingly large and well-textured mature leaf development.
  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2-4 weeks during active growth. Reduce in winter. Consistent nutrition supports the energy demands of producing large, heavily veined leaves.
  • Temperature: 65-82°F (18-28°C). Keep above 60°F. No cold drafts or AC vents — strictly tropical with no cold tolerance.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals causing irritation and swelling of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings taken just below a node, rooted in water or sphagnum moss in warm, humid conditions. Provides a moss pole from an early stage — this species responds strongly to vertical support with progressively more impressive foliage.

Tiny print
Format: Hardcover
I bought this as a gift. She loves it, but the print is terribly small and the hard cover won't lay flat. I'm going to return it and order one that she can read without glasses and a magnifying glass.

Meaningful curriculum that I highly recommend.
Format: Paperback
Heard about this book from a friend who is a teacher. Her entire school is using this curriculum and seeing great results. I bought a copy and the poster set to try for myself. Students loved it! We had amazing discussions and my students' kindness level increased by 100 percent. I appreciate that there is a curriculum for public schools that takes the students to a deeper level of understanding about themselves and others. More of my colleagues are interested in this material and I think we will be doing a book study soon. Hoping it will be adopted by our curriculum department for the entire district. Pros: Easy to use,, researched based (not fluffy), poster set to support, nice work pages for students to use during the lesson, age appropriate, meaningful connections made between myself, students and between the students and their families. Well received by community. Cons: Lessons were slightly longer than 35 minutes but I added my own activities for additional interest. Not a good curriculum for educators who only want to focus on academics.

Some of the scripting is rather good, especially for safe touch
Format: Paperback
I was rather excited about this book initially. The work pages are done well for their appropriate age levels and I felt the lessons were okay. Some of the scripting is rather good, especially for safe touch. However, it is mostly seat work. I was looking for something that would work with all learning styles better and include a few interacting activities, maybe even a game. I have quite a few kinesthetic learners so I have had to come up with my own activities to go along with it.

Successful!
Format: Paperback
I taught these lessons to my students at the end of the school year which can be a hectic time. I could tell the students really understood the love languages and were applying them at school and at home. I look forward to using it to start off the new school year.
