Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek Variegata’, commonly called the Variegated Alocasia Frydek, is one of the most striking and collectable foliage plants in the aroid family (Araceae). Originating from the Philippines, the species is admired for its velvety, arrow-shaped leaves with bold, contrasting venation – but the variegated form elevates this beauty to another level.

The foliage is the main attraction: large, velvety, emerald-green leaves marked with dramatic white veins and overlaid with unpredictable marbling, splashes, or sectoral patches of creamy white or mint variegation. Each leaf is unique – some may be heavily patterned with white, while others display delicate streaks or half-moon variegation. This combination of velvet texture and bold colour contrast makes the plant highly desirable among collectors.

Mature plants typically reach 45–60 cm in height indoors, creating a clumping display of arrow-shaped leaves supported by upright petioles. The rare variegation means growth is slower than the standard Frydek, but the reward is extraordinary foliage that looks like living art.

Alocasia Frydek ‘Variegata’ – Care Guide

Light

Requires bright, indirect light to maintain variegation. Too little light will reduce the creamy-white markings, while harsh direct sun may scorch the delicate variegated sections.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, watering when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Do not allow the plant to sit in water, as this can cause root rot. In winter, reduce watering when growth slows or dormancy begins.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Protect from draughts and never expose to temperatures below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Use a humidifier, pebble trays, or mist occasionally to prevent crisping edges on variegated leaves.

Soil and Potting

Plant in a chunky, free-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir is ideal. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix, but avoid over-potting.

Feeding

Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop during dormancy.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove old or yellowing leaves at the base to keep the plant healthy. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to preserve their velvety sheen.

Growth and Dormancy

A relatively slow grower due to reduced chlorophyll in the variegated foliage. Like many Alocasias, it may enter dormancy in winter – leaves may die back to the tuber, which will re-sprout in spring under warm, bright conditions.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity.

  • Loss of variegation: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs.

Background and Benefits

The Variegated Frydek is one of the most desirable Alocasia hybrids available, combining the velvet leaves of A. micholitziana with unpredictable variegation patterns. Its rarity and slower growth make it highly collectable, and its exotic look adds elegance to tropical plant collections.

Get these! You won't regret it!
These are my go-to winter shoes! They are waterproof- I love them bc they don't look like your typical "rainboots"! Stylish- I get compliments everytime I wear them! Comfortable- first time I wore them they were tight through the middle of my foot, but after two wears I had them nice and broke in, now my most comfortable shoes!

So nice but not a good fit on my foot
I love these boots so much, they’re exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, they are too big in the heel and flop, while too tight in the toe. I know the toe would stretch with wear, but can’t deal with a floppy heel, they pulled my socks down off my feet. I do have narrow feet. Too bad, I’m so disappointed! They seem well made and would go with everything. Comfortable, too, if they fit right.

Best boots I have ever purchased
I do appraisal work so I was looking for something cute/professional yet durable and rugged for when I work outside in all types of weather. Found it! So comfortable, so cute, and waterproof. I wear them most days for both office work and inspection work. I range between 8.5-9 and I got a 9 and they fit great both with thin socks or thick socks. I very highly recommend.

    Perfect for travel... very comfortable!
These things are amazing! I bought these a couple weeks before a trip to Italy and had planned on doing a lot of walking in them. I only got to wear them a couple times before we went on our trip, but no blisters, even during LOTS of walking in them on the trip! They wore in super quickly while still keeping their durability. My feet stay dry even in lots of rain. The photos show the wear on them after a few months, including a couple weeks of travel, and weeks of wear around town. My only complaint is that there is a tiny something (a little knot of thread with glue? not sure...) that is at the top of the opening of the boot, and it rubs the back of my ankle and makes a sore. That isn't enough to make me not wear them though. There's a photo that shows this. As you can see it's super tiny, and probably not even a flaw, it just hits my ankle *just* right so that it rubs.
