Product Description

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Grenan') is a lovely garden companion selected for its ability to enhance the romance, texture, and seasonal beauty of a rose garden. With its large serrated green leaves and lacecap clusters that form balls of pastel flowers — sky blue in acidic soils, pink in alkaline soils — blooming in waves from late spring into fall on both new and old wood, this reblooming bigleaf hydrangea brings soft, romantic color while helping create a fuller, more layered planting design.

Nantucket Blue™’s three-season bloom from spring through fall and its butterfly-attracting flowers make it one of the most long-blooming companions in the rose garden. Its cold hardiness to Zone 4 makes it suitable for a wide range of climates.

Maintenance Needs

  • Watering: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mulch to maintain moisture. Tolerates clay soils.
  • Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained. Bloom color shifts with pH: sky blue (acidic), pink (alkaline).
  • Pruning: Blooms on both old and new wood — prune lightly after flowering if needed. Avoid heavy pruning in fall.
  • Fertilizing: Feed in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Use acidifying fertilizer to encourage blue blooms.
  • Winter Care: Hardy to Zone 4; mulch soil to overwinter in colder climates.
  • Pest & Disease: Slight susceptibility to bud blight, wilt, leaf spot, and mildew. Aphids are occasional problems.

Landscape Uses

Nantucket Blue™ Hydrangea is a versatile, larger shrub that fits beautifully into a wide range of garden styles and settings.

How to Use Nantucket Blue™ with Roses

Nantucket Blue™ pairs beautifully with roses by adding soft blue or pink lacecap blooms, texture, and three-season interest. Its sky blue blooms in acidic soils create a stunning cool-toned complement to warm-colored roses, while its pink blooms in alkaline soils harmonize with blush and pink rose varieties. Its spring-through-fall bloom season means it keeps the garden vibrant throughout the entire rose season.

Grace Rose Farm Tip: Plant companions near roses with enough space for airflow and maintenance access. Avoid crowding the crown of the rose, and choose companions that enjoy similar sun, soil, and watering conditions. Nantucket Blue™’s sky blue blooms create a particularly striking complement to warm-toned roses in apricot, coral, and red.
  • Use beside or behind roses for a soft blue or pink lacecap display throughout the season.
  • Acidify soil to encourage sky blue blooms that complement warm-toned roses beautifully.
  • Choose for northern gardens where cold hardiness to Zone 4 is needed.
  • Pair with Deutzia, Azalea, or Hibiscus for a layered companion planting scheme.
  • Allow 5 feet of spacing so the larger spreading habit does not crowd adjacent roses.

Fantastic Trail Guide
Format: Paperback
From the very beginning of this book, you can tell where Tami’s heart is. She genuinely loves this trail and being in the outdoors. It is written in a way to be easy to read, but filled with priceless facts and experience. I am very grateful to have this jewel at my fingertips to plan my hike of the Wonderland Trail about a year and a half from now.

very useful details, and some humor
If you're going to hike the WL this is the book to get. Lots of very, very useful details, and some humor. She really understands trail hiking. Hint: to save weight download it to a Kindle. (I'm not really an Amazon employee!). Then, read the information about the section you will be hiking next in the evening before or first thing while you're eating your oatmeal. ps: The WL trail is challenging but incredibly worth it. Get the book but more important, hike the trail.

A heartfelt, inspiring travelogue and meditation on living well
Format: Hardcover
Gordon Bernhardt's Buen Camino is a great accomplishment and a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking read. Gordon opens his generous heart and extraordinary life to his readers and takes us with him, winding through a fascinating, historically informed and personally reflective commentary on the places and people of this ancient journey, his own life, memories, fears, triumphs, his personal commitment to service and growth in his life's work, and his connections with a remarkable community of fellow travelers on the road. The many photographs and questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter were very effective. I was left with a desire to someday walk this path myself, and with a great appreciation and admiration for Gordon's persistence and positivity, both in making this journey and in his life and work.

A Heartfelt Story to Help Us Embrace Our Personal Journeys
Format: Kindle
“Buen Camino: What a Hike Through Spain Taught Me about Investing and Life” is a heartfelt story by author Gordon Bernhardt about his adventure traveling the Camino de Santiago beginning in France and ending in Spain. It is much more than a travelogue; it is a journey into life lessons both in Gordon’s personal life but also in his professional life. He includes deep revelations, humor, and puts readers in the setting of the pilgrimage through his words and images. I highly recommend this positive book reminding readers to enjoy our moments, appreciate our fellowship with other humans, and embrace our personal journeys.

An inspiring book on the uplifting qualities of the Camino pilgrimage
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
I highly recommend the book, “Buen Camino”, written by Gordon J. Bernhardt. It is focused on his 2018, 35-day pilgrimage/trek called the Camino de Santiago, or The Way of Saint James. The walk starts in the Pyrennes at St Jean Pied de Port in France and ends at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in northern Spain, then to the coastal towns of Muxia and Finisterre, 618 miles later. Gordon shares what the pilgrimage meant to him as a way to reset his life, his interaction with the pilgrims along the way and the life lessons learned, how to handle unexpected problems and opportunities, and the importance of stepping away from our busy lives to help us focus on the true priorities. He blends his experience on the Camino with his profession in wealth management, and how helping/interacting with people in his personal, professional, and spiritual life has enriched his existence. After reading this book, you will walk (pardon the pun) with a different view of what is truly important in your life.
