Description

Dieffenbachia seguine ‘Tropic Marianne’ is a widely cultivated selection recognized for its luminous, two-toned foliage. The large, broadly ovate leaves feature a pale chartreuse to cream central zone sharply contrasted by deep green margins, creating a dramatic, almost hand-painted appearance. This cultivar remains compact and symmetrical compared to older, taller Dieffenbachia forms, making it one of the most stable and enduring selections in the genus.

Botanical Interest

Like other members of Dieffenbachia, ‘Tropic Marianne’ belongs to the Araceae family—relatives of Philodendron and Anthurium—and originates from a lineage of tropical understory plants native to Central and South America. Its striking variegation is the result of a mutation affecting chlorophyll concentration along the midrib and leaf lamina. The pattern is stable across generations of vegetative propagation, which has contributed to its popularity among growers and its frequent use in hybridization programs.

In mature specimens, the plant develops a short, cane-like stem and may produce inflorescences typical of the family: a pale spadix partially enclosed by a greenish-white spathe. These rarely appear indoors but reveal its close relationship to other aroids.

Growing Conditions (Indoors)

  • Light: Prefers bright gentle light to maintain color contrast; too little light can dull the variegation. Avoid harsh direct sun.

  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist but not saturated. Allow the upper inch to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Humidity: Average Bay Area humidity is generally sufficient, though moderate humidity encourages larger leaf size.

  • Temperature: Ideal range is 65–80°F. Protect from temperatures below 60°F.

  • Soil: Use a well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, and organic matter for proper drainage and root health.

Growth Habit

A self-heading variety that typically reaches 2–3 feet in height indoors, forming dense clusters of leaves from a central crown. With age, it can produce short canes, which may be pruned to encourage basal regrowth.

Pet Safety

Not pet safe. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation if ingested.

Notes

‘Tropic Marianne’ represents a milestone in modern Dieffenbachia breeding—valued for its compact form, uniform variegation, and resilience in interior conditions. It remains one of the most recognizable cultivars in horticulture, bridging ornamental appeal with botanical interest.

Clean product
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I only gave it 4 stars because of the smell. Of course it’s sunscreen so it’s going to have a chemical smell but this smell is just too strong for me. Other then that, it’s a great sunscreen. Does take some more rubbing in and be carful to rub it in really good or you’ll have white streaks all over your face. Leaves a bit of a white cast. You don’t need much.

Great quality

Thinksport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc is a reliable, high‑protection option that feels lightweight and non‑greasy on the skin. It applies smoothly without leaving too much white cast for everyday use, and I love that it’s mineral‑based with zinc for strong UVA/UVB defense. Great for active days outdoors. Highly recommend for sensitive skin and safe sun coverage!

Brown skin approved!

Does not leave a white cast, feels very light on the skin. Scanned on Yuka and was a 86/100 green zone! It’s so hard to find a sunscreen that isn’t trying to poison you, scanned all the sunscreen at Walmart and were rated a 1/100 through 6/100. Which brought me to Amazon. Thinksport has my vote on goodness and healthiness, would buy again!

My favorite... And I'm picky.
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've become a little obsessed with sunscreen over the last past 5 years. I have olive skin and developed melasma after my first pregnancy. I learned the hard way that chemical sunscreens don't help if you have melasma - and they actually make the dark spots even worse. Also the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens (like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate) are absorbed by your skin, and may cause allergies, hormonal imbalance and be toxic overtime. After learning that, I started wearing only mineral sunscreen (active ingredient is zinc and/or titanium dioxide). These are not absorbed and works by creating a physical barrier that reflects the sun (some studies suggest that some nanoparticles of zinc may be absorbed by your skin, so to be really, really safe you should look for non-nano particles). After trying a few brands, I realized the sunscreens with only zinc in their formulas worked better than the blends with titanium dioxide, but this is just my personal preference I guess. And the higher the percentage of zinc, the better. Most pure mineral sunscreens out there are 10-ish % zinc, SPF 30, 40 min water resistant - which is ok. Thinksport goes beyond that: It's 20% non-nano zinc, SPF 50+, 80 min water resistant. It really can't get any better than that! The lotion is not extremely thick when compared to other sunscreens I've tried and I find it pretty easy to apply. As every zinc sunscreen, it does leave a little fine white cast, but honestly Thinksport is not bad at all! It smells nice, lightly citrusy - and the smell vanishes soon. And, it's not overpriced. Best I've tried so far.

Works but will Dry Out Your Skin
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I am a swim instructor at an outdoor pool and this stuff DOES work. I can apply it at the beginning of a 5 hour shift and while I have experienced light tanning it has protected against burning completely without reapplication. The white cast is significant though I don't mind it aesthetically, I know its there for protection . It does rub off on things though so consider yourself warned. Major Con: it is incredibly drying, and the soap needed to scrub it off is A LOT. That coupled with chlorine is a lot for my skin . Still on my sunscreen journey.
