Calochortus gunnisonii, commonly known as Gunnison's mariposa lily, is a striking perennial wildflower native to the western United States, particularly found in mountain meadows, open woodlands, and dry grasslands. It typically grows 8 to 20 inches tall from a bulb, producing slender, grass-like leaves that die back as the plant begins to flower. Blooming in late spring to early summer, it features showy, upright, cup-shaped flowers with three broad petals that range in color from white to lavender or pale pink, often marked with a central blotch or spot of darker color and covered in fine, satiny hairs. These intricate blossoms are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Calochortus gunnisonii prefers well-drained soils and full sun and is well adapted to dry, rocky, or sandy environments, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It goes dormant after flowering, with the bulb storing energy underground for the next season. Due to its delicate appearance and unique floral structure, it is a favorite among wildflower enthusiasts and native plant gardeners.

Germination

To successfully germinate Calochortus gunnisonii seeds, start by mimicking their natural dormancy-breaking process. Provide a period of cold stratification by refrigerating them for a few weeks. Begin by preparing a well-draining planting medium composed of a mix of sand and peat or a commercial seed-starting mix. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil mixture, pressing them lightly into the substrate. Moisten the soil gently without oversaturating it, and cover the container with a clear plastic lid or a plastic wrap to create a greenhouse-like environment. Place the container in a warm, brightly lit area, ensuring it receives indirect sunlight. Germination typically occurs within several weeks to a few months, and as the seedlings emerge, gradually expose them to more direct light and adjust watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves, they can be transplanted carefully into individual pots or an outdoor garden space with well-draining soil and adequate sunlight.

Great Product
Format: Paperback
I was very happy with this purchase. The book came in almost perfect condition with an unused access code inside. There were a few minor bends/blemishes on the outside of the book, but none of them affected the content of the book.
