Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’

Thick velvet leaves give Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’ its dark, spade-shaped outline, with pale metallic veins running through the surface. New growth can open with burgundy tones before hardening to deep green to near-black shades.

The plant grows as an upright clump, with firm petioles holding the foliage above the pot. This slower Anthurium responds best to steady warmth, filtered light and an airy root zone once it has settled.

Foliage features of Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’

  • Leaf shape: Broad spade-shaped blades with a defined base and a tapered tip.
  • Surface texture: Velvety foliage that can show marks if leaves stay wet or rub against nearby plants.
  • Colour change: New leaves can flush burgundy before hardening to a darker mature green.
  • Venation: Pale metallic to silvery veins become clearer as the leaf expands.
  • Growth habit: Upright clumping growth from a compact base.
  • Root behaviour: Fleshy Anthurium roots need oxygen around them and decline quickly in dense, wet soil.

Growth and leaf development

This is a velvet foliage Anthurium with weighty leaves and a relatively compact base. New leaves are soft when they emerge, then firm up as the surface darkens and the veins become more defined. A settled position helps new leaves expand with fewer marks, especially while they are still soft.

A potting mix with bark, coco chips, coarse perlite or pumice gives the roots space to breathe. The plant should sit firmly in the pot, while the mix remains open enough for water to drain and air to reach the root system.

Care for Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’

  • Light: Place it in bright filtered light. Direct midday sun can mark velvet foliage, while very low light produces slower, weaker growth.
  • Water: Let the upper part of the mix dry before watering again. The root ball should not stay wet from top to bottom for long periods.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity helps new leaves expand more evenly, especially while the blade is still soft.
  • Airflow: Humidity works best with gentle air movement, because still damp air can leave velvet leaves marked or spotted.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and stable, away from cold windowsills, winter drafts and sudden temperature drops.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky Anthurium or aroid mix with large particles for drainage and root aeration.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Flush the mix occasionally if mineral residue builds up from fertiliser or hard water.

Common issues with Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’

  • Brown patches on velvet leaves: Often linked to direct sun, water sitting on the leaf surface, low humidity or mechanical damage.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Check whether the mix is staying wet too long or has compacted around the roots.
  • Stuck new leaves: Dry air or unstable warmth can make emerging leaves unfold unevenly.
  • Soft roots or sour-smelling mix: The substrate is too wet or too dense and should be checked before more foliage declines.
  • Fine speckling or dull patches: Inspect the undersides and petioles for spider mites or thrips, especially in warm dry rooms.

Safety for Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’

Anthuriums contain insoluble calcium oxalates. Keep Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’ away from pets and children who may chew leaves or stems, as ingestion can irritate the mouth, throat and stomach.

Name etymology and background

The genus name Anthurium comes from the Greek words anthos, meaning flower, and oura, meaning tail, referring to the tail-like spadix. The cultivated name ‘Ace of Spades’ is used for this dark velvet selection with spade-shaped leaves, burgundy new growth and compact upright habit.

Perfect!
Great book for just what you need if you are a first time mom or dad. Lets you take in all of the overwhelming information that comes with parenthood in easy to bite pieces with pictures and captions. Very appealing to the eye and easy to put down and pick up whenever you have time. Does not go into a lot of detail on most things, just gives an overview and pointer for almost any question or concern a new parent might have. If you need more information because of your situation you can then seek it elsewhere.

Wonderful book
This is the best baby book ever in my opinion. It's very detailed and informative but the way it's set up doesn't make it overwhelming. Also, this book has lots of beautiful, colorful, bright pictures in it. I purchased this book along with Pregnancy Day by Day. I definitely recommend this book!

Perfect Replacement for Loofahs
Scent: White with Green Edge
I really like these myHomeBody Dual-Textured Exfoliating Washcloths. Where other options only have the roughness, this set has a soft side and a rough side. Having the soft side not only increases how far soap goes (these produce a ton of suds!), but also makes the towels easier to grip and use. The rough side is the perfect roughness for replacing loofahs, and is great for exfoliating and managing things like keratosis pilaris. I am so happy with these! I am definitely ordering more.

My new washcloth every time I shower at home or the gym
Scent: Gray
I initially used an Axe loofa with the scrub pad on one side and a plastic mesh on the other. However, I also wanted a washcloth to clean crevices such as ears, toes, and *other* parts. This product marries the two parts I want (cloth/scrub). The cloth side is soft for cleaning inside the ears, on eyelids, etc., and the scrub side is perfect for the rest of my skin and makes it smooth and healthy-looking. I use a fresh one every time I shower so there is no bacteria growth, and I use it when showering after gym workouts. Also, there's a loop on them so they can hang from the water handle when you're not using it. I wash them with my regular laundry without damage to my clothes from the scrub side; just let them dry completely before placing them in the hamper so mold doesn't grow. I've had them for 6 months and they still look new, so it's worth the extra $ for that reason. My only suggestion is that they offer to sell them in packs of 5 or 7 at a lower price per washcloth, so it's cheaper to buy a week's set in one purchase.

If you're partial to mesh loofahs, get these instead!
Scent: Gray
Here I am, a 33 year-old guy and avid death metal fan. Writing reviews for, and getting excited about exfoliating shower cloths. I'm not sure what brought me to this point in life, but I'll attempt to share some wisdom now that I'm here. Before these cloths entered my life, I was supremely dedicated to showering with traditional mesh loofahs. They had a good "scrub factor" and showering with bare soap bars or normal cotton wash cloths just made me feel like I was pushing soap around without actually getting clean. Well, I eventually got frustrated with having to keep a bunch of them stocked in the bathroom cabinets and the enormous amount of waste they produce. It's recommend to replace traditional mesh shower loofahs every 8 weeks, but uhhh.. who are we kidding? You'd be lucky to use one for half that length of time before the knot loosens up and it all unravels on you. Enter: these things! These double-sided wash cloths take everything I enjoyed about mesh scrubbers and put it all into a different form-factor. Both the soft side and the exfoliating side make a rich lather with a minimal amount of body wash, which is something you WON'T get with regular wash rags. These cloths are strong, well-made, and mostly importantly they won't unravel into a pile of cheap plastic. Another advantage these have over regular cotton rags is that they're made of a quick-drying material, which makes it a lot harder for bacteria to harbor and grow. A thorough rinse along with a firm wringing to expel the excess water before hanging it up to dry, and you're good to go! One more advantage these have over loofahs and sponges is how much better the cloths are for getting into tighter spaces (I'm specifically referring to cleaning feet and in-between toes, but yes, it'll get THOSE areas nice and clean too) 👌. At $20 for a 3-pack (on sale for $15 at the time of this review), these cloths are more expensive when compared to the cheap mesh loofahs that you can pick up for $2-3 a piece. But trust me when I tell you that these cloths will far out last even the most premium loofahs, and they clean infinitely better as well. Give 'em a shot, and maybe one day you'll start getting excited about boring, dumb adult stuff too! 🤘
