Myrtillocactus geometrizans fukurokuryuzinboku is a rare Japanese cultivar of the blue candle cactus, developed for its distinctive swollen stem segments. Its name translates to "Lucky Dragon" in reference to its unusual growth form, which is the result of a natural mutation maintained through propagation. The species Myrtillocactus geometrizans is native to central and northern Mexico, where it grows in arid and semi-arid regions, often on rocky slopes in full sun.
This cultivar shares the blue-green epidermis of the species but forms rounded protrusions along the ribs instead of the typical straight, angular profile. In maturity, plants can branch to form candelabra-like shapes, though growth is generally slower than the standard form. Flowers are small and greenish-white, appearing in spring to summer, followed by edible purple fruits in favourable conditions.
In cultivation, it prefers bright, direct light and a well-draining mineral-rich soil mix. It is highly drought-tolerant once established but should be watered more regularly during active growth in warmer months. The unusual stem form is best maintained by growing in strong light, and its rarity and slow growth make it a desirable specimen for collectors of unusual cacti.
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to very bright light encourages strong growth and maintains form.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings; increase slightly in summer growth period.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity; ensure good airflow.
- Media: Use a fast-draining cactus mix with added mineral content.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced, dilute cactus fertiliser during the active growing season.
- Temperature: Best between 15-32 °C; protect from frost and prolonged cold.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when root-bound, handling carefully to avoid damaging stems.
