DESCRIPTION
You will receive approximately 4" pot-sized plant similar in the photos.
This item will be shipped bare root or in original plastic pots, whichever is better for the plant. We handpick to order and make sure all are healthy plants before shipping.

Opuntia × basilaris ‘Baby Rita’ is a compact, cold-hardy hybrid prickly pear cactus known for its stunning seasonal color changes and small size. This beautiful cultivar is a cross between Opuntia basilaris (Beavertail Cactus) and another cold-tolerant Opuntia species, resulting in a plant that’s both visually striking and resilient.

The pads are round to oval-shaped and emerge in shades of soft purple and pink, especially in cooler temperatures or full sun. New growth often displays vibrant magenta tones. In spring, it produces cheerful yellow to pale pink flowers that contrast beautifully with the colorful pads.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Full sun for best color and growth.
  • Water: Very drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining sandy or gritty soil.
  • Temperature: Extremely cold-hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -10°F (-23°C); USDA zones 5–10.
  • Growth Habit: Low-growing and clumping, typically reaching 8–12 inches tall and 12–24 inches wide.

Special Features:

  • Vibrant purple/pink pads with seasonal color variation
  • Cold-hardy and drought-tolerant
  • Low maintenance and ideal for rock gardens, desert landscapes, or container growing

For tough chewers
This is great for my large puppy. It has taken a beating, and I trim off any hanging or loose pieces of rubber. It has survived the test of time.

We call it the brick.
Great chew toy. Not really made for playing fetch. It’s large and very heavy. Good construction.

Indestructible but hard to get treats out
We have a power chewer and have had the black Kong products for a long time. I opted to try this new design however, the shape makes it difficult for our dog to reach the treat. We have stopped using it since I had to keep digging the treat out for her. : ) The black Kong shaped like a pear works much better for her. Giving this 3 stars overall because she can't really use it well.
