Variegated Century Plant — Phoenix's Most Striking Large Agave for Bold Desert Landscapes

The Variegated Century Plant (Agave americana 'Variegata') is the showpiece agave of the Phoenix Valley — a massive, architectural rosette with dramatic cream-and-green striped leaves that commands attention from across any landscape. Reaching 6–10 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide at maturity, this is one of the largest and most visually striking agaves available. Its bold variegation adds year-round color and contrast that few other desert plants can match. Whether you're anchoring a grand entrance in Scottsdale, creating a Mediterranean-style garden in Chandler, or designing a statement xeriscape in Mesa — the Variegated Century Plant delivers unmatched scale and beauty.

Variegated Century Plant Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Grand-Scale Focal Point

The Variegated Century Plant is the ultimate statement piece for large desert landscapes. A single mature specimen can anchor an entire front yard, median, or commercial entry planting with its massive cream-and-green rosette. Plant it where it has room to reach full size — this agave demands space and rewards it with unforgettable presence in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Tempe properties.

Mediterranean and Tropical-Inspired Design

The bright variegation gives this agave a lush, almost tropical look that pairs beautifully with Mediterranean and resort-style landscape designs popular across the Phoenix Valley. Combine with bougainvillea, Mexican Bird of Paradise, and ornamental grasses from Three Timbers for a vibrant, water-wise palette that feels luxurious without heavy irrigation.

Commercial and HOA Landscapes

For commercial projects, HOA common areas, and resort landscaping in Gilbert, Peoria, and Glendale, the Variegated Century Plant delivers high visual impact at low maintenance cost. Its bold scale means fewer plants are needed to fill large beds, and its drought tolerance keeps water bills down. Plant 8–10 feet apart for grouped installations.

Best Time to Plant Variegated Century Plant in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil encourages root establishment while cooler air reduces transplant stress, giving the plant 6–8 months of root growth before its first Phoenix summer. Spring (February–April) is the second-best option. Avoid planting in the peak of summer, especially for larger box sizes.

How to Plant Variegated Century Plant

  1. Dig wide, not deep — excavate a hole 2–3x the width of the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball itself.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer to ensure proper drainage below the roots.
  3. Backfill with native soil — a light 20% organic blend is fine, but avoid rich potting mixes.
  4. Spacing — 8–10 feet apart for grouped plantings; 10–12 feet as standalone specimens to allow full spread.
  5. Water basin — build a 4–6 inch soil ring around the plant to direct water to the root zone.
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of gravel or decomposed granite to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Watering Variegated Century Plant in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 2–3 days, deep and slow (30–45 min for larger sizes)
  • Month 1–2: Every 4–5 days
  • Month 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days in peak summer)
  • After Year 1: Every 14–21 days in summer; monthly or less in winter

Drip Irrigation

Place emitters 18–24 inches from the trunk. For larger box-size plants, use two 2 GPH emitters on opposite sides. Once established, the Variegated Century Plant is extremely drought-tolerant and needs very little supplemental water.

How fast does the Variegated Century Plant grow in Phoenix?
With Phoenix's long growing season, expect 8–12 inches of new growth per year. A 5-gallon plant will reach impressive size within 4–6 years. Larger box sizes provide instant impact from day one.

Is the Variegated Century Plant drought tolerant?
Extremely. Once established after the first year, it thrives on minimal irrigation. It stores water in its thick leaves and can survive extended dry periods — perfect for Phoenix's arid climate.

How big does the Variegated Century Plant get?
This is one of the largest agaves commonly available. Expect 6–10 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide at full maturity. Give it plenty of room — it will fill the space beautifully.

Does the Variegated Century Plant bloom?
Yes — after 10–30 years, it sends up a dramatic bloom stalk that can reach 15–30 feet tall with yellow-green flowers. The main rosette dies after blooming but typically produces pups (offsets) that continue the plant.

What's the difference between Variegated and regular Century Plant?
The Variegated Century Plant features cream-yellow margins along each leaf, creating a striking striped pattern that the standard green Century Plant lacks. The variegated form tends to grow slightly smaller and is more prized for ornamental use.

  • Green Giant Agave — Another massive agave option for bold-scale landscapes and commercial projects.
  • Palmer's Agave — An Arizona native with blue-gray rosettes and excellent heat tolerance.

How Many Variegated Century Plant Do I Need?

This is a grand-scale architectural agave, so it is almost always used as a single bold focal point rather than a hedge. With a mature spread of 8 to 12 feet, give a standalone specimen 10 to 12 feet of clearance, or space grouped plants 10 feet apart on center so each rosette can reach full size. Because the leaves carry sharp marginal teeth and a stiff terminal spine, keep it set well back from walkways, pool decks, and play areas.

Planting Spacing Plants needed
Single grand focal point standalone, 10 to 12 ft clearance 1
Bold odd-numbered group 10 ft centers 3 to 5
40 ft large median or entry run 10 ft centers 4 to 5
80 ft commercial frontage 10 ft centers 8 to 9

Variegated Century Plant Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb to Apr): Fast new-growth flush as days warm, with the cream variegation at its brightest. An excellent second planting window. Decades-old plants may launch the towering bloom stalk.
  • Summer (May to Sep): Thrives in extreme heat and reflected heat off walls and pavement. Keep soil fast-draining through the monsoon (July to September) so the large crown never sits wet.
  • Fall (Oct to Nov): The best planting season in Phoenix. Warm soil and mild air let roots establish before next summer.
  • Winter (Dec to Jan): Stays evergreen and holds its bold form. As an americana selection it is genuinely cold-hardy to roughly 15°F, so it shrugs off normal Phoenix frost with no cover, though the variegated tissue can show minor tip burn in an unusually hard freeze.

Is Variegated Century Plant Right for Your Yard?

It is an ideal fit for large open yards, medians, and commercial frontages in full sun with fast-draining or caliche soil, where you want a single dramatic specimen to carry the whole bed. It is cold-hardy enough for any Valley winter. It is not the right choice for small yards or tight beds, or for spots near walkways, pools, and play areas, because of its eventual 8 to 12 foot spread and sharp, toothed leaves.

Gorgeous 😍
Size: 2' x 6' (Natural), Color: Champagne, Size: 2' x 6' (Natural), Color: Champagne
Absolutely beautiful!!! It is thick and luxurious, super soft and cozy. It’s really high quality and it shows. You can tell it’s natural without the burn test even from its cute little curls. All brushed (your pet brush is perfect 😉) out it looks stunning and fluffy. I got the champagne color and I love it! I don’t see any seams on the double pelt and it is substantial, not at all like it will disintegrate in a few years, but rather will become a much loved family heirloom. Well worth the investment! It is absolutely heavenly to perform yoga on by the fire 😌I love taking my slippers off and feeling the soft fur. I don’t want to get off it lol. I understand all those other customer’s kids and cats 🤣😂🤣

This is the one you want...

I bought a ‘Genuine Sheepskin Rug Double Pelt Natural White Fur 2x6’ from Amazon in 2011 for $112.49, and recently decided to recommission it in my new living room. It looked so nice that I decided to add a second rug, and was pleased to find what Amazon claimed to be the same rug still available for only $83.78. Now I’m not one of those silly folks who expects the color and/or size of a natural product like a sheepskin rug to be perfectly predictable, and my living room is large enough that I didn’t need the two rugs to match perfectly, but when the new rug arrived, I couldn’t have been more disappointed. It was about 40% smaller than my older rug, was way, way off from anything that could be called white, and looked cheap, old, and tattered. I tried to comb it out a bit to see if I could make it look presentable, but it was a lost cause. Amazon to the rescue. I returned the rug to Amazon for a full refund the next morning, and the transaction couldn’t have been simpler. And I immediately ordered the ‘Genuine Sheepskin Rug Double Pelt Natural White Fur 2x6’ shown on this page from Super Area Rugs for $119.00. What a difference! These rugs are large, plush, and super soft. The quality of these rugs is obvious, much, much nicer that either my old sheepskin rug or the ‘bargain’ rug I returned to Amazon. I was so impressed with the quality of this rug that I immediately ordered a second, which arrived this morning (it matches the other rug perfectly). My older sheepskin has been reassigned to another room because, well, it’s not in the same league as my two new rugs, which look terrific together. As is so often the case, you get what you pay for. So if you’re looking for a top quality sheepskin rug, this is the one you want.

Very nice fleeces
This is a clean, soft, well groomed fleece intended for use on a 6 foot long sofa, so bought 2. They moved too much as a result of shifting bodies on the leather couch, so will get a longer version, sewn bottom to bottom, and used each of these fleeces on both armrests, instead.

Excellent Product!!! Will purchase again!
Size: 2' x 3' (Natural), Color: Wolf Tipped
Instead of ordering a cover for reclining loveseats, I chose to drape one of these over the headrest on either end of our loveseat. Not only do they protect the leather, they also help to elevate our decor. The rugs were received in a very timely manner. They are super soft, & warming as we move into the winter months. We've had family & friends comment on how great they look. 2 of them have already ordered, & added them to their sofa/loveseat/recliner decor. Have an issue of them slipping, add some velcro in between the crook of the cushion & the back of the furniture piece. It doesn't show & will help to keep the rug in place; if your busy body.!

Perfect for sensory sensitive kids and for the pure beauty of it

After speaking over the phone with the seller, I was confident in this purchase for my SPD son. They do not use harsh chemicals or dyes in the process. It is from New Zealand and the only use in Vietnam is for shipping. My son hasn't been diagnosed yet for Autism but he is in the process. He is super sensitive to all things sensory and Amazon feedback isn't the place to give specific details on his condition but I will write that when he fist touched it- which was willingly- he smiled and asked to sleep on it. When he laid down on it and I covered him- he was calm and smiling. In the pic I provided he is calm and holding his door (his obsession is doors and windows). He even set his door down to hold the fur. For other mommies and papas with spd/autistic kids you know that willingly touching a new fabric and setting down an obsessive item is huge and super encouraging! I am so grateful to have such a quality item that is affordable for my special needs son. His older sister received one as well as is now pretending to be a sheep. Fun for everyone! The ONLY negative is that the brand/info sticker on the pelt was a pain to get off and pulled some of the felt - not damaging it but blemishing the unity -but if the skin is down it will not be noticeable. A super fun detail is that all of the fur is combed out but there were a few strands that were wavy and had a slight curl- I LOVED that. There was no odor at all which is great! I expected an animal smell which is better than chlorine or dioxin which is what competitors use in their process. There is no noticeable seam in the middle on the top where the two pelts are gathered. I am soooo satisfied!
