Classic compact lavender with Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead'

Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' is a compact English lavender with violet-blue flower spikes and a strong, familiar scent. It forms a neat mound that reads cleanly as edging or as a repeated accent through sunny beds and container plantings.

The plant keeps a woody framework, so it offers structure beyond flowering. With consistent, light shaping, the outline stays dense and the foliage remains an active part of the display rather than a background layer.

Munstead growth and seasonal shape

Spring growth starts from the woody base and quickly fills out into a rounded mound. Flower stems rise above the foliage in summer, then the plant settles back into evergreen texture once spent stems are removed.

A mature plant usually reaches around 45-60 cm in height with a spread around 60 cm, depending on root space and pruning. In pots, growth tends to stay more restrained, which can be useful when you want a compact lavender shape close to seating.

Sunny placement and soil texture

Open sun supports firm growth and better flowering. A lean, well-drained root zone is the main requirement; lavender copes with a wide pH range when drainage is good and the crown is not kept damp.

If soil is heavy, improve structure with grit through the planting area and avoid thick organic mulch against the base. In gravel-style planting, the foliage and flowers read especially well against stone and pale mineral surfaces.

Reading pot moisture by depth

Use a pot with generous drainage and a gritty outdoor mix. Water thoroughly when needed, then allow the mix to dry back so roots regain air.

A simple check is the top third of the pot: when it feels dry and the container is noticeably lighter, water deeply and let excess drain away. Avoid keeping the centre constantly moist, especially during cool or wet spells.

Pruning Munstead after flowering

Light shaping after bloom keeps the mound tight and helps prevent woody gaps forming. Keep cuts in green growth where leafy buds are present.

  • After flowering: cut off spent stems and lightly round the mound.
  • Spring tidy: remove winter damage once new shoots are moving.
  • Cut depth: avoid cutting back into bare wood with no leafy growth.
  • Feeding: keep nutrition light; overly rich growth softens stems and scent.

Munstead issue signals

A dull, soft centre is usually a drainage signal rather than a drought signal. In containers, repeated rain plus a heavy mix can trigger quick decline unless excess water can escape freely.

Reduced flowering most often links to reduced sun or pruning that was too late in the season. If the plant looks open and leggy, a slightly earlier trim and brighter exposure usually restores density.

Practical uses for Munstead

Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' suits herb gardens, path edging, small sunny beds, and container groups where you want a compact lavender mound with reliable summer colour. It pairs easily with rosemary, thyme, salvias, and fine grasses, and it holds its place in a scheme beyond peak flowering.

Great Value and Very Durable Plates
Color: Brown, Size: 10 in - 75 count
These plates are a great value for the price considering the quantity and the quality you get. Getting 75 plates at this price point is already a win, but the durability makes them even better. They’re biodegradable, which is a nice bonus, and they’re definitely not flimsy. These plates are stiff and sturdy — I can load them up with a pretty heavy plate of food and they still hold up without bending. They also do really well in the microwave, which makes them even more convenient for everyday use or parties. Overall, a really solid disposable plate option that’s durable, eco-friendly, and a great value.

A bit iffy on these plates
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count, Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
These plates are ok, but certainly not the best I've found. On the positive side, they are what I'd consider "Lunch Size" an are somewhat sturdy. They'll hold a sandwich and chips with little effort so, as a plate, they do... plate. Where I am a bit hesitant is in their molding an construction. You can see in my photos that there is significant staining/watermarking on the plates from the manufacturing process. This could be simply from the way the wet pulp was extruded and formed, but it honestly gives me a bit of the ick. Not that it's particularly gross, but it does make me wonder how sanitary the plates are or what binders might be leeching into my food. In my last photo, you can see a comparison to a compostable plate that I really like. The finish is cleaner and the mold included an inner ridge which gives the plate more stability - making it less likely to flex under weight. Both are sugar cane fiber plates and my preferred plate is a few dollars more expensive for a comparable pack, but the clean appearance and extra rigidity make it worth the added spend in my opinion. Ranking these 3-stars might lead some to think they're bad - and to be clear, I don't think they are. They're just adequate. If you're looking to save a few bucks on a compostable plate, these WILL get the job done. I would just shy away from using them with wet or acidic foods since they don't boast the highest quality of manufacture.

Strong Eco Friendly Plates But Not Great For Hot Food
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
I picked these up because I wanted something more environmentally friendly than the usual plastic or paper stuff. They are made from bamboo and bagasse, and you get a good amount in the pack for the price. For dry stuff like snacks or sandwiches, they are super sturdy and do not bend at all when you pick them up. However, they do not hold up very well when you put hot or wet food on them. Even though they are supposed to be heavy duty, I noticed they can get a little soft if the food is really steaming. They are still perfect for a quick lunch or a party where you want an easy cleanup, but you might want to double them up if you are serving something heavy and hot. The plates are big, and you get quite a bit, making it a really good value overall.

Heavy duty paper plates
Color: Brown, Size: 10 in - 75 count
These disposable plates are amazing. They're large enough to hold an entire Thanksgiving meal. They're sturdy and strong, and won't buckle even when supporting quite a lot of weight. They don't get soggy even when I deliberately poured water in them. The sides are built up to keep food from falling off the plate. These are everything you'd need in a disposable plate, and they're biodegradable, too! These are ideal for barbeques or outdoor entertaining, or even for everyday use in the kitchen.

Compostable Paper Plates
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
I ordered these because I like using paper plates and wanted to see if the compostable ones were strong enough for regular use. They're sturdier than regular paper plates due to the increased thickness of these. I've put heavy food on them like ribs and sides and they haven't bent under the weight. They feel more like pressed cardboard than paper and hold up through a full meal without getting soft. The brown color is a little utilitarian looking but that doesn't really matter for what they are. I guess I wouldn't use them for a party or something fun like that. They stack neatly and take up about the same space as regular paper plates.
