Leucanthemum vulgare Oxeye Daisy / Moon Daisy / Dog Daisy

The original British wildflower — large pure-white petals around a vibrant yellow eye, bobbing and swaying on tall wiry stems through the long light of British early summer. Oxeye Daisy is the foundation plant for any wildflower meadow project, a tough vigorous native perennial that establishes quickly, returns year after year, and acts as the ecological anchor around which any naturalistic planting establishes.

This is the definitive native British wildflower. Also known as the Moon Daisy (the white flowers appear to glow in evening light) and the Dog Daisy, the Oxeye is the daisy that has given the word "daisy" its associations with simplicity, cheerfulness and the innocent pleasure of a summer field. The large flower heads (5–7cm across) feature broad pure-white petals surrounding a vibrant yellow disc, held on tall (40–60cm) wiry stems that bob and sway in summer breezes, creating the characteristic rippling meadow effect that has been part of the British countryside for as long as records exist — exactly the same way it grew in the fields of Saxon England, medieval Britain, and the unimproved pastures John Constable painted in the early 19th century. Hardy native perennial (H7), surviving the harshest UK winters. RHS Plants for Pollinators — the broad flat heads act as a landing pad for a vast array of insects, particularly butterflies, beetles and hoverflies.

The pioneer plant: In the wild, Oxeye Daisies are often the first flowers to colonise bare ground. They spread via underground rhizomes and by self-seeding, effectively "knitting" a wildflower patch together. They are perfect for stabilising banks or filling large wild areas quickly.

A note on growing

The single most important rule for Oxeye Daisy (and for virtually all native wildflowers): poor soil produces the best plants. Rich, fertile, heavily-amended soil produces tall, leggy, floppy plants with proportionally fewer flowers — and crowds out smaller meadow companion species. Do not feed. Wildflowers evolved in the lean, competitive conditions of unimproved grassland where fertility is low — they are genetically programmed to produce their best performance under precisely these conditions.

Sow outdoors in Autumn (September–October) or Spring (March–May). Scatter seeds onto bare, raked, weed-free soil. Press them firmly into the surface — light required, do not bury. Germination 14–28 days. Full sun. Poor, well-drained soil. No feeding.

Year 1 vs Year 2 — the patience requirement: Oxeye Daisy sown from seed typically establishes a rosette of basal leaves in year one without significant flowering. The plant invests its first year in root development. From year two onwards, established plants produce the full flowering display with multiple stems per clump. By year three, established clumps begin to expand and self-seed, gradually building the meadow colony that was the original intention. Companion annuals sown alongside (Cornflower, Poppy, Calendula) provide year-one colour while the perennials establish.

The annual cut: in late summer or early autumn after the flowers have set seed, cut the entire planting back to the ground. Remove all cuttings immediately — leaving them in place would add fertility to the soil and tip the balance against the wildflowers. This single annual cut is the entire management requirement of a wildflower meadow containing Oxeye Daisy.

⚠️ Moon Daisy Warning: Oxeye Daisies are incredibly vigorous and spread freely. While perfect for wildflower meadows and naturalistic areas, they can easily take over a small formal border. Plant them where they have room to spread, not in a delicate composition with small or slow-growing neighbours.

Where it shines

In wildflower meadows as the foundation native perennial — there is no better starter plant for any meadow project. In rewilding corners and naturalistic plantings. On banks and slopes for stabilisation. In sunny borders where the wildflower aesthetic is wanted. In children's nature gardens. As cut flowers for cottage-style posies (the same white-and-yellow we sell as dried Oxeye stems in the dried-flower range here at Salle Moor Hall Farm).

Plant alongside

The classic British wildflower meadow combination: pair Oxeye Daisy with Poppy 'Flanders Red' for instant colour while the perennials establish — Poppies are hardy annuals that flower in year one, providing scarlet impact while the Oxeye Daisies build their root systems. With Yellow Rattle (if stocked) — essential if sowing into existing grass; semi-parasitic to grass, weakening it and allowing the wildflowers room to thrive. With Cornflower 'Blue Ball' and Corncockle for a complete traditional cornfield meadow tapestry. With Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) for the iconic native lace-and-daisy meadow combination.

Impressive
Style: Updated Formula
Nice thick cream! I even saw results (skin improvement) within days. I like this way better than their Cicalfate+, as it’s easier to rub in, less greasy, and doesn’t have the water vs cream separation issue. I’m not a huge fan of the pump top for this one, but at least it’s a tube instead of a solid canister (where you can’t see how much is left or get to the last bit).

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).

Gentle everyday cleanser!
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
My go to nightly cleanser! Gentle yet effective. Removes makeup without leaving any residue behind. Also does not dry out my skin or cause breakouts! I would say it’s more of a cream cleanser though. It does not really foam up. It’s a decent size bottle for the price. The pump dispenser is an added plus!
